I'm all for trading him. That being said, his pure stuff is front-line starter like. Plus fastball with what could be a 70 curveball and a 55 change up. Pretty similar repertoire to McCullers.

He's still just 21. His K rate is still amazing. Control has fallen off. Not dominating AAA at age 21 doesn't mean he's not an elite prospect, right?

I certainly wish he was crushing AAA as well, but I feel like we've been slightly spoiled by Correa, Bregman, etc.

Astros should have traded Martes, Tucker, and Musgrove for Quintana when they had the chance.

Seems like we could still make that trade if they wanted to.

I feel like in the Quintana thread I said something like "You guys don't want to trade him for Quintana because there is a chance he might be Quintana?.." ppl are dumb

That logic makes perfect sense if it is true. If Martes was truly on par with whatever pitcher he might be traded for, then it is clearly preferable to keep Martes as he is under club control for 6 years or so.

? It doesn't matter what he is "on par" with... we are on par to get 117 wins, Altuve is on par to hit .400+, Judge is on par to hit 50 hr (i made most of that up just to make a point) I bet none of that happens.

If you asked me I offer you this season of the Astros, or the 1998 season of the Yankees who do you take? The Yankees won 114 games and the WS... Technically, the Astros could beat that and are cheaper, but TAKE THE YANKEES 1998 SEASON!

I was just responding that the logic makes sense. If someone thinks Martes is as good as Quintana, then to that person it would be stupid to make that trade. You can certainly argue whether Martes is equal to Quintnan (and I am not saying he is), but you can't fault the logic.

There is no one that thinks he is as good (at least I hope) but there are ppl who think he might be in the future. That is the logic I am against.

Jose Quintana has a higher ERA than Mike Fiers.

Ok, so if they offered Quintana for Fiers you would say what?

Don't have any inside knowledge, but I'm assuming they are probably asking for a little more than Mike Fiers.

But Fiers has a lower ERA, he is better, so it seems like a better trade for them right? I mean you have called me out on ERA repeatedly, I figured you would be against this trade for the Astros..

On that note, only guys with low ERA/highish WAR on bad teams I could find were: Vargas (KC), Leake and Lynn (STL).. could we go for them? - asking everyone.

Seems to me the underlying fear is that nobody really believes we will out-pitch the Nationals as an example in the playoffs. I mean we might hope for it, but nobody really feels like it's a sure thing. And I think we all want it to be a sure thing with a 100% confidence factor. Let's hope Martes is the guy we've been looking for, but if he's marginal, the playoffs will still be a rollercoaster ride. Our lineup has two studs, possibly three, but we've seen how that's gone before. On paper, I am confident winning the AL matchups, but world series has me concerned.

    World Series matchup:
    Scherzer (7-3 2.35) vs. Keuchel (9-0 1.67) ( 50% confidence )
    Strasburg (7-2 2.80) vs. McHugh (13-10 4.34) ( 10% confidence )
    Roark (6-2 3.95) vs. vs. McCullers (6-1 2.58) ( 70% confidence )
    Gonzalez (5-1 3.03) vs. Morton (5-3 4.06) ( 30% Confidence )

Let me get this straight...you have McHugh as our number 2?

I get your point. But for reasons such as bullpen... I don't see Nats getting there. It's going to absolutely kill them.

We could trade them Gregerson and it would be an upgrade on what they got. He could probably be the closer.

But yeah we would all feel better adding that ace. Personally, I've faded off of Cole and Quintana but maybe they are cheaper now and it's worth it. Who knows. But Archer or a Darvish would make me feel better heading into a Nats series.

I'm gonna guess Fangraphs listing of Martes at 170 is slightly outdated.

This looks bad until you factor in each team's lineup and bullpen. It's like saying the Texans should beat everyone in the playoffs just because you're comparing their defense to everyone else's while ignoring the offense and special teams.
