    bump

I just purchased this game for 35 bucks and I'm hooked. I've put in 10 hours so far combining last week's free weekend until now. I played a couple hours last night right before I went to bed and I kid you not when I closed my eyes all I could see was me playing Overwatch.

It seems like every day I discover a new character that I like playing with. Recently I discovered Lucio and Widowmaker. You don't really get how useful some characters and abilities are until you fully understand the strategy of the game. My first few times playing I thought Lucio was the most pointless character ever but now I see that he's pretty powerful. That's what I like about this game, every character seems to have the potential to be the best character in the game depending on the situation and the user. Incredibly balanced cast yet their abilities are so diverse.

I'm level 18 now and am already starting to change my play style as I play more experienced teams. A lot of the gimmicks like camping at a defense point with your Bastion worked great against noobs but don't at all against seasoned players.

I hope they continue adding more maps.

Be sure to learn the team comps as you progress. Nothing is worse than when everyone has picked a role and then the last guy left needs to pick up a healer and ends up picking Hanzo or Genji lol.

I think I'm starting to outplay my rank. I immediately jumped into competitive mode after reaching level 25. I wasn't ready. I went 1-9 in placement matches and got 1,000 SR. I continued to lose a bunch and dropped to like 600 SR. Something clicked and I'm starting to work my way up, I think I'm 15-4 or so in my last 19 games. Now at 1300 SR. Starting to play in a lot of games where it's just ridiculously easy to win.

I didn't expect to see an Overwatch thread here.

    General competitive quick tips:
    - Group up - rushing in alone and dying just guarantees defeat
    - Learn a hero from every category to be versatile
    - Learn how to deal with choke points and where health packs are on maps.
    - Once you start to level up, you will notice a huge change is competitiveness and communicating and abusive language.
    - The current meta is 3-2-1.... 3 Tank (Rein, DVA, Roadhog/Zarya) 2 Healers (Lucio, Ana), 1 DPS (Soldier 76). But most casual teams will consist of "222" instead.
    - Playing a "troll" character will get you blasted during game.
    - Don't go on a long losing streak or else you will enter Elo Hell.
    - HAVE FUN!

I have about 250 hours (Lucio is 190 hours) played.

Just jump into quickplay, you will be matched with other newbies. For a new player game sense isn't as important as mechanical skill, but general guidelines are this.

    1. Group up and try to exploit advantages. Pay attention to the kill feed, if you are in a team fight and your team gets a pick, it is a signal that it's time to get aggressive and engage. Most of the time if you have a man advantage, you will win that team fight. Probably less likely so on Bronze where you are matched with players with bad aim, but it's still a fundamental concept of OW.
    2. Target healers/squishies first
    3. Don't do garbage damage, get elims. Damage means nothing in this game, elims do.

    Practice before going competitive.
If you go Competitve try to learn/master a hero in each category.
    Don't pick Hanzo/Widowmaker.
Make friends. Communication is very important so join team chat.

I main Widow and there are so many people that get salty when I lock her in, and then I carry. :)

With that being said, never go defense Widow on the first point.

Not sure anything is written down, but each class has counters.

High mobility, light health harrassers (Genji, Tracer, Sombra) strong against healers, but weak against Torb / Winston / Roadhog

Mcree / Soldier good against anything at med to long range, but weak in an up close melee fight.

Pharrah/ Junkrat good at shield busting and long distance AOE damage, but week against the direct DPS classes (Mcree / Soldier)

Its hard to list out all the classes strengths and weaknesses, you just have to play and learn.

My advice is to pick three or so different types of characters and really master those 3.

Mine are Roadhog, Winston, Solider, Pharrah, DVA

i guess when i think about it...when i started playing the first SC...i had a friend send me replays he watched to learn how to play with. still seems like if this game is more for the casual gamer..figure they'd help with that. i'm awful at FPS...this game allows me to do other things than straight up shooter battles right?

If you are a crappy at FPS, there are ways to play that don't require aim.

For example, Lucio one of the healers is a DJ on rollers skates. He has two music modes, healing and speed. All you really need to do is skate around near your team and use your AOE heal or speed.

Winston, is a giant leaping Monkey who has a arc type electricty gun. It also does AOE damage so you don't have to aim much.

The game definitely has FPS elements but you can definitely have fun in a niche role.

also read maybe it was the winston guy can just setup camp and be a turret to defend bases and what not. i don't mind playing support roles. hell all i did in the halo days with friends in CTF was sneak around and try to get the flag while battles were going on haha.

    quick google search produced this:

    https://www.wired.com/2017/01/overwatch-guide/

If you haven’t played an first-person shooter since, Oh God, What’s Happening, I Thought You Said I Didn’t Need to be an Expert for This?

:Try Reaper. His goth kid aesthetic and straightforward tactics make him a bit of a joke in the community, but he might be the easiest character to learn for a beginner. His kit is simple: He can teleport short distances, briefly turn into a spirit to move without being vulnerable to harm, and he has two shotguns. You see where this is going. Get in close, break some faces, and get out. For someone who isn’t used to team-based shooters, one of the most difficult concepts to learn is how to move and keep up with your team. Reaper is one of the few characters who can be efficacious on their own in the event that you do lose track of your position on the map. Just try not to get surrounded, and make your way back to your team when you’re done with the stuff-breaking.

    good advice or nah?

I think you are over thinking it.

    Just try the game.

It really is a lot of fun. And it has smart matchmaking which will scale opponents to your skill level.
