Producer: We want you in our Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde remake. Crowe: I am so ready for the role of Mr. Hyde. Producer: We want you as Dr. Jekyll Crowe: Dammit. I must be getting old.
I don't think so. The same of kind thinking sank the King Arthur universe just a few weeks ago. Warner Bros had a movie planned for each: Lancelot, Guineviere, and Merlin before a Camelot ensemble. Point is every studio now wants a cinematic universe, but the question again is do audiences really care? Marvel is the only commercial and critically successful universe so far. The verdict is still out on DCEU and if audiences show up for their 2nd tier offerings like Aquaman and Cyborg - something Marvel has proven with great success. Again, I must reiterate The Mummy looks terrible. CGI crapfest written all over it. Just watch the trailer. Tom Cruise is no longer a surefire box office draw outside of Mission Impossible franchise. This will fail miserably, mark my word. There will be no cinematic universe. Audiences have gotten smarter thanks to rottentomatoes and metacritic. The first few reviews and word of mouth will sink this abomination.
If done right, audiences care about going to next one. If done wrong, audiences care about not going to next one. Not sure whether this franchise will get off the ground or not, but I would not have started with Cruise.
