Five Guys's burger is okay. Nothing special, but their cajun fries are legit.
In-n-Out is trash. It's the freshest ingredients of the fast food burger chains, but doesn't taste good.
Shake Shack makes a good bun, but overpriced for the tiny thing.
Wendy's is salty. Never much liked their burgers.
    Never had Culvers.
Whataburger is a good greasy burger. Best in its class for the fast food price point. Fries are pretty bland, though.

As a Canadian I found Five Guys to be a bit inconsistent. I've had it in the DC and New York, and Toronto, the one in DC was better than the one I had in NY which was faarrr better than the ones I had in Toronto.

Shake shack is on par with Five Guys, never had In-n-Out or Whataburger

I feel like the fast food burger joints (e.g. those with drive-thrus) should not be judged against those that are purely sit down/take a number restaurants.

To that end, it's amazing how good Whataburger is even though they compete in that space.

We recently got a Carl's Junior, and after trying a few of their signatures I am realizing I like more "Texas Style" burgers, mustard only, veggies all the way like the default at sonic, whataburger, Texas Burger, and Dairy Queen.

THe exception is McD's. For some reason I've never been a real big fan of their burgers, until they recently came out with the Mac Jr. better value, and proportions more to my liking. Of course it was gone as quick as it came, and now they won't even make a single pattie single bun single cheese version without charging you for the full premium sandwich. A manager recently told me a menu-hack for that- you can order plain mini cheeseburgers & just request that they dress them like big macs. Love them as breakfast food with coffee, not as normal lunch burgers. Too bad MD's only makes burgers so late (or luckily they don't... I drink coffee there a lot, the mini cheeseburger big mac style would have become a staple with that if it were available).

If I'm going to a becks prime, I'm not getting a burger. I'm getting the ribeye sandwich or something. ANd other random more premium burger places others have taken me to don't do it for me, or else I've just ordered the wrong thing that sounded good on the menu.

OT has anyone heard if whataburger is discontinuing the A1 thick & hearty btw?

They cycle it in and out, so hard to know for certain, but they seem to be replacing it with a super similar but not as good sweet/sour and spicy burger. In some areas (brazoria county) they're side by side, and in most houston locations the sweet & spicy has supplanted it. I;m guessing a licensing agreement falling out between them. I mean A1 wasn't benefiting from this relationship at all- I once went to pick up a bottle from the grocery for a recipe and only then realized "A1 thick and hearty" is a version of A1, not just what WB calls their a1 sandwich.

MY other theory is since whataburger is getting into the sauce game, among others, they want to supplant a1 with something of their own, i.e. the sweet and spicy. I mean they already have an heb exclusive for their own mustard, spicy ketchup, some facimile of fries (shoestring potatoes), BREAKFAST SAUSAGE, among others... of course theyre not paying another dime to a1 for licensing for that one. THe problem is Im not interested. I'll be buying bottles of a1 thick and hearty, and F whataburger unless im buying a straight up texas style whataburger. Put a-1 on my own home concoctions if need be. Wish i could be a fly on the wall in those meetings.

Ah Shake Shack. Home of the glorified SteaknShake burger and crinkle fries that one could get from the frozen food dept at the local grocery store and fry up to basically taste the same as the overpriced and overrated Shake Shack combo.

Also, this burger convo is always a mess because some of the places are fast casual burger joints (5 guys) and some are fast food (In-N-Out).

No, it's whataburger. Not that it's bad but I can get juicier burgers at a truck stop or down the corner. Yeah I said it!

I could live on In-N-Out. When you live in California, it just becomes like crack. I crave those fries and burgers like no other. Not only that, but it is by far the cheapest burger out there.

I also love a good Five Guys burger and I LOVE a good Whataburger. (But it is unfortunate that some people just don't "get it" when it comes to In-N-Out. It's a beautiful thing when it clicks. Perhaps an acquired taste)

Peeps that don't like In-N-Out usually have some sort of bias going in. It's a Repub/Democ TEAM thought process. You especially see the bias from Southerners.

Freshest meat, freshest vegetables, freshest fries, Nearly half the price. (WINNER DING DING DING)

I'm not sure how anyone can overrate Whataburger. Granted, it's an opinion, but I think Whataburger is the best fast food burger place.

Im not so sure about that. I did not grow up on Whataburger so I never had a bias...if anything, the opposite. It wasnt until the recent years when I made trips back to Texas did I learn to appreciate Whataburger. Not that I think Whataburger is the second coming of JC, but is certainly one of the best fast food chain burgers out there. Hardees/Carl Jrs is a good second, but that is comparing an Angus burger with regular ground beef.

I recently had In and Out in San Antonio. It was good, but I certainly did not understand the hype around this burger. I was looking forward to a delicious feast and I felt like I walked away with something closer to a jr burger.

That said, I understand freshness. Ive had some pretty mediocre meals from Whataburger.

I have given In-N-Out multiple chances, and like others in this thread, I just find it... bland.

    Pros:
    Great prices
    Great service/cleanliness
    Milkshakes are good
    Ingredients are fresh

    Cons:
    Entrees lack flavor
Fries are the worst in the industry
"Secret menu" is a dumb gimmick

I'd love to go to this place, but they're closed for dinner and on weekends.
