I was under the impression that you can't cut an injured player in the NFL until his rehab is complete. http://www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-0928-ask-farmer-20140928-story.html
Semantics, maybe - but I don't believe Watson equaling Savage will force a move; at least not this year. He'll have to be across-the-board better for them to make a change, IMO. And not only better but Savage will have to be underperforming, too. Any average+ performance from Savage is probably good enough to hold Watson off in 2017.
You could literally take the opposite of what he is saying and be right more than 60-70% of the time.
We're 2 deep right now and believe both backups can be cut without any dead money on the books. But sounds like Franklin had a terrible season. Rather wait for a OT after June 1st cuts.
Pancakes is clear; the only way Watson starts this year is if Savage gets hurt. He said what Lance Z wondered about the night of the draft; Weeden is the backup. Now, I firmly believe that is what they are telling him, but at some point in his career you'd think he wouldn't just let them stick their hand through the back of his head and flap his gums for him. Watson might not start or play this year at all and he may be third string every week. Or he might start the game after the bye, or he might start week 1, or he might come in for injury...the possibilities are endless. If Obrien has proven anything it is that he is never locked into a guy at any roster spot (except Alfred Blue.) I doubt Watson starts, but it's certainly possible he does if he earns it.
Pancakes is the epitome of lazy, entitled journalism. The reason why he allows them to use him as a meat puppet is because that's the path of least resistance for him. He literally just reports what they tell him to say, and never digs any deeper because that would require actual work, and he clearly feels like he's above that nowadays. Essentially, "until he's/it's not" should be added to the end of everything he says. i.e. "Tom Savage is the Day 1 starter for the Texans......until he's not." "It's true that the Texans want to keep A.J. Bouye......until it's not." "Rick Smith and Bill O'Brien get along just fine, and have a good working relationship......until they don't." "I'm a respectable journalist who goes above and beyond what's required of him so I can get to the bottom of the story......until I'm not."
I was just responding to the idea of Watson getting the nod if it were to be a lateral move from Savage - I don't think that would trigger BOB to make a move. I think Watson is going to have to out... practice him, I guess - AND Savage is going to have to struggle for there to be any changes. If the Texans are winning and Savage is Bryan Fitzoyer-like he'll be safe. At least this year.
For sure if it's a lateral move, they'd stick with Savage due to his superior knowledge of the system, but if Watson can come along that far that quickly it'll be a good sign for the future.
