Where are you getting this data? According to your buddies, namely Nick, a team can't be analyzed until 162 games. I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to contradict that asinine philosophy
But your choices are Harris or Feliz from the current roster. Harris was the closer for a while last year and his first 11 save opportunities look eerily similar to Giles first 11 this year. A couple of close saves where he gave up a run and another where he gave up a run in a blown save. Also includes a 4 run implosion that the Astros had to come back and win in the bottom of the 9th. You say they have to make a change and Giles won't be the closer at the end of the year, yet you have not offered a viable solution. I'll quickly go through the list for you: Holland from the Rockies will probably be available unless they continue to surprise. He is the class of the closers as of right now. Iglesias from the Reds seems to be having a good year, but is an unknown as he has no real history. I suspect Melancon would be available, but he sucks so far this year. Every other available closer would not be any sort of significant upgrade to Giles as it stands today.
All I did was make 4 factual statements in the interest of education. I stated no opinion on Ken Giles as closer.
I haven't given up on Giles. He has awesome stuff and pitches great sometimes. Let's hope he continues to improve. So far, this season has been a huge blessing. Lord knows the city and its fans have earned it.
Well, you certainly led me to infer something about your opinion of Giles through your smug statement of those facts, didn't you buck.
I don't care....I told you, I don't want to go around in circles, then you proceed to not shut up about it. So, you are right, lets stick with Giles.
I thought about him until I remembered that he signed a massive FA deal in the offseason. He's been dealing with some forearm stuff so far this year as well. I do expect them to look into another reliever this summer, I want a high leverage type who kills both LH & RHB. Don't particularly care what arm he throws with, but LH would sure be nice. Should be easy and cheap to acquire. Get on it, Luhnow. Just the facts, ma'am.
How is it going around in circles to ask you who a better available option is? You suggested Harris, who was very similar to Giles as a closer last year. You suggested Feliz who is an unknown and you said they maybe need to go get someone without offering any suggestions as to who that someone might be. If you don't want your opinions or comments questioned or discussed, don't make them.
see, why don't you just say that you have been considering options too? You know it's not unreasonable, but you choose to be a dick first? why? and how did you know i was female?
Unwavering support that he's probably the best option among what the Astros have (changing him for Harris doesn't change that he will be in game deciding moments so flipping them means nothing to me) and that there is no way the Astros are going to win a bidding WAR for a closer. I think the Nats still have Matt Albers as their closer...you know the guy that was an Astro a decade ago and just popped his save-virginity (I think he was active leader in relief innings without a save at the time).
So, earlier in this thread you were ready to see him go, now you're saying "If he falters". I thought, in your mind, he had already faltered - at least your posts have come out that way.
As an aside, (regardless of gender), are you unfamiliar with the "just the facts ma'am" reference? It's from the old Dragnet TV show.
When I am reacting to a game, I will make any number of inflammatory statements (because I am a fan). And If I say "if he continues to falter" that will trigger the loop where you try to prove he hasn't faltered. So, here is my official stance "ahheem, I declare that Ken Giles performance thus far in the season has me thinking about the possibility of using alternative options down the road. There are many, and I don't know which one I like best, and I haven't evaluated every one, but I will continue to evaluate these options as the season progresses. " I am not actually female, I was ****ing with him, I did not know it was a reference to an old TV show, I am not even 30.
(Disclaimer: the following comments aren't necessarily directed at you) The point about baseball, is that it is such a long season with so many games that all players will slump. They will all fail. Knee jerk/inflammatory reactions are just that and tend to be pointless. We had posters complaining about Correa essentially because of one bad week. Marwin is a God because of one great week or so. It is so interesting reading a lot of negativity (from a number of posters) and the Astros have the best record in baseball. The granularity that some posters use to make season decisions based on a game or a series of games is pointless. Sure it's fun to discuss strategy and performance but some of the harping around here is tiresome. At the end of the day, regardless of Hinch's lineups and in-game decisions, regardless of Altuve's base running blunders, regardless of Giles one blown save, regardless of Fiers miserableness, regardless of Bregman's lack of HRs, we should relish in the fact that currently the Astros are record-wise, the best team in baseball. Surely most things must be going right. Also, everything that has happened so far this season is known. Had Giles not closed last night, they may have lost. The fact is, he closed and they won.
Interesting stat on Ellsbury just mentioned on MLB. He led the league last yr with TWELVE catcher interference calls. He has twenty-eight for his career and is one behind the all-time leader Pete Rose.
OK, i'll play. First, Giles game log: http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/32762/ken-giles The Good: -He has only caused us to lose one game -Most of his bad outing were in early/mid April -SO/BB ratio 18/5 -WHIP (1.07) -Has yet to yield a HR The Bad: -4.20 ERA Looking at just numbers, everything looks pretty good except his overall ERA. Observationally, he is not a close down, knock out guy. I think he would be better as a setup guy in a perfect world.
My only real issue has on this forum has been with Giles. I understand baseball. I never wanted to move Correa down or bat Marwin cleanup for god's sake.We are just going to have to agree to disagree on Giles. I believe his performance this year has been shakier than what the "1 blown save" would indicate. I also think he has enough history of inconsistency where it should not be considered a "knee jerk" reaction to be concerned about him. I get that you feel differently, and some of his stats support you feeling differently. So, in the interest of not beating a dead horse, what do you say we let it go, and let it play out?
