I have dreamed of working for the Houston Rockets since I knew I wanted to be a graphic designer. I never really thought it was possible and I still kind of don't, but their is currently an opening and I am going to apply.

I need some help with the cover letter... Should I mention how much of a fan I am? For instance, that I have been a fan of the team since I was 8? Or that this would be a dream job for me? I have never applied to a company that I am passionately invested in, so it's hard not to write as a fan boy.

Good luck, man. Yes. Show passion in your letter.
Graphic design the crap out of your resume. Come up with some way to make you stand out over the others.

Yes you should. It might make them want you to be the best candidate but it obviously comes down to your portfolio.

Once upon a time, the Texans were hiring a senior accountant. I was a senior in public and figured "why not?". I already had my CPA and wanted to change jobs.

In my cover let, I said some really goofy stuff like "I can tackle any accounting problem. Some may call me the JJ Watt of accounting." I kind of thought it would get a few laughs and maybe an interview for being creative. I never got a call or e-mail. I'm not saying it's because I did the cover letter like that, just a funny personal story.

Just keep in mind, there's probably like 1000 graphic designers applying for that job, and many will probably take less money than market in order to work for the rockets. Lots of competition to get on at a sports team.

I knew a guy who fulfilled his lifelong dream by landing a job in the Rockets marketing department about 10 years ago. He ended up quitting after about 6 months.

Cool story, bro, but the short version is that they seemed to know when people were in it because they were just fans, and exploited it for lower salary and more work.

    YMMV, of course.

That's a huge worry for me but I'm applying anyways. If I even get a chance to interview I'll try and ask the right questions, get a sense of the work environment. I'll be pretty happy with just an interview honestly, my current job is good so it wouldnt be the most devastating thing if I didnt get it.

I mean, I think you have to, right? What's to lose?
