Lance Z just said o brien is not too involved with this draft. This is most likely his last year unless he has a great record n they reach a higher level.
I see that as a good thing. Dump BOB, give the job to Vrabel and have him bring in an offensive coordinator that knows what he's doing.
I was about to throw a fit, but this makes a lot of since. I can get with it if it plays out that way.
Well, that possibly adds interesting context to the "OB not happy" talk. "Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends...."
Hard to believe a rookie QB will have much if any effect in win/losses on OBie's last contract year with the Texans. McNair stuck with Kubiak long past the point he should. OBie is a better coach than Kubiak, so I don't see McNair giving up on OBie. McNair has publicly said that he values stability in his key appointments.. McNair cites the Steelers as the case for point for stability.
I agree about McNair and those who keep whining like b****y little girls about changing owners need to go and Google "Bud Adams". Now as for BoB well he's sort made his bed and now has to sleep in it. I heard Lance Z also and I agree about him (BoB) needing to do more this season in order to save his job. It's put up or shut up time.
Except - if BOB is unhappy and on his way out.... why did the team trade Brock Osweiler if, as reported, that was a move made without BOB's involvement?
Right; a claim I would term dubious because, as I cited, there are examples very recently of BOB very much being in control of personnel. I suppose a split could have deepened, post-Osweiler - but the prevailing wisdom is that BOB was the driver of ousting Brock.
From O'brien's perspective it might though. If O'brien feels like he's got the QB of the future right there, and the world feels like it... say they draft Mahomes, Watson or Savage plays pretty solidly, it makes O'brien happier and less b**** and grumpy and both more likely to want to stay and less likely to piss off McNair. McNair wants stability, but he seems to also want guys who he can work with and respect him.
Yes it is... no accountability at the top. The guys on XM NFL talk about it all the time. A non competitive out of touch owner. The owners son that lacks ability. A GM that is an expert at shifting blame. It isn't the worst job in the NFL but not an organization that coaches will line up to go to. It is an organization content to go 9-7 and boast of winning the worst division in football.
Given what O'Brien has wanted at QB, I don't think it's a good thing for him to get the guy he wants. Also, it's not about O'Brien being happy, he's the guy on the hot seat looking to get fired if he doesn't start doing something to justify his position.
The timing makes sense to me. O'Brien has given himself an out to future employers if the Texans draft/signings don't pan out. O'Brien can now argue to future employers that he isn't responsible for the Texans QB problems and as a result never had a chance to pick the players needed for his offense to flourish. Rick Smith is an ass kissing POS GM that is an expert at playing politics... apparently O'Brien is two... so the tension is natural. Both of them are blaming the other for the teams mediocre success. Hopefully when Grandpa McNair dies, his sketchy son will decide to sell the team and take the quick cash.
He makes himself look like an idiot by doing things like this especially when he's had the team pick up awful QB's in the past AND given that "his offense" has produced less and less every season. He might get another job after the Texans fire him, but it'll likely be his last chance as a head coach in the NFL. Honestly he's probably better off going back to college.
I agree it makes him look like a fool to people following the situation closely. However 12 months from now? He has planted the narrative that his failures are the result of management and ownership. I wouldn't hire O'Brien, but the NFL loves to recycle coaches. I wouldn't be shocked if he is coaching another team in the NFL in 12 months. Having said that, O'Brien is arrogant to a fault and has an ego that really isn't justified based on his track record. His offensive "system" is a sham.
