President Donald Trump said in a New York Times interview that a top House Democrat heaped high praise on him during a private meeting, yet continued to criticize him in public.

Claiming that Democrats admit in private that they're not strongly opposed to Neil Gorsuch as a Supreme Court nominee, Trump dropped the following bombshell:

"Elijah Cummings [a Democratic representative from Maryland] was in my office and he said, 'You will go down as one of the great presidents in the history of our country,'" Trump told reporter Maggie Haberman.

Trump said he later saw Cummings bashing him on TV and thought, "Is that the same man that said that to me?"

But Cummings, the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, has since disputed Trump's version of events.

He told the Washington Post:

Retail sales declined in February and March from the prior month, according the Commerce Department. Shoppers haven't been this stingy since early 2015, and it's likely to hurt the economy.

The U.S. is on track for very sluggish 0.5% growth in the first three months this year, according to the latest estimates from Macroeconomic Advisers and the Atlanta Federal Reserve. That falls massively short of the 4% growth that Trump has promised.
