Idgaf about that, we've been in afghanistan forever, am i to understand there wasn't not some combination of diplomacy and military pressure that could've stabilized the situation? And i'm not saying we could've fixed it, we could've simply realized that what we were doing was not working and either pulled out or worked with other countries to develop a more longitudinal approach. But no, we just kept on deciding to go into other BS in the middle east. It's been one bad decision after another, made by presidents from both sides. The current one just happens to be the most dangerous because he's a more or less a loose cannon.

The afghanistan bombing may not consequentially amount to anything in terms of military escalation, but it definitely points to a pattern of decision making that is hostile, short sighted, and focused on short term political gains.

Fine, he's more easily convinced and less predictable than others.

You're right. I didn't see the "kilo" prefix next to tons for Little Boy. My mistake.

TV says they were targeting caves and tunnels. It probably takes a pretty big bomb to cave those in. Anyway, I have no problem with it until I hear a specific reason why I should.

That's ridiculous. I have faith in the US military but not in Trump's understanding and coordination of a long range strategy. My concern is that he is going to hear "bomb" and say ok without understanding how actions affect the future in more areas than just, "we have a target."

I'm hoping for the best here but my concern is that the message it might inadvertently send is that we are 1 step of escalation away from a nuke.

Trump is a master media manipulator (well... master media narrative changer). What is the media talking about now? (Hint: Not Russian ties to Trump campaign)

However I think this particular bomb probably had little to do with Trump's decision making since this war has been going on since George W. and Trump obviously thinks Iraq and Syria are the same thing.

The most charitable explanation to Trumps strategy would be McMaster going to Trump and saying "we are going to need to drop a bomb on X site" and Trump saying "Can we make it bigger.... like the biggest we can find?" ... McMaster... "Uhh... you want to NUKE a mountain in Afghanistan??".... Trump -"Do you think that's too much?... Would dropping a Nuke hurt my ratings.. err I mean polling?"

That, and apparently the shockwave alone kills everything inside of said cave/tunnel.

Deckard, these are dropped by a C-130, not a bomber. They're 30 feet long and weigh 22,000 lbs.

I think it's unlikely that the military is just straight bad at organizing strikes, but they definitely don't learn from their mistakes. I think bombing areas and looking for terrorists that are hiding among civilians is an impossibly hard task, but they just keep doing it, with no conscience, no matter how many innocent people die. I understand the President calls the shots but even Obama (an alleged liberal) was very trigger happy with the drone strikes (10% success rate) and airstrikes. The military advisers have shown an inability to learn from errors and either develop better strategies or show some f***king reluctance. And ya, Trump is definitely willing to take more risk without thinking anything through so I don't trust him either.

That being said, this specific strike looks more and more like a distractor. The media is already going crazy over the "Mother of All Bombs", the escalation in Poland is getting no coverage, that is the more concerning issue to me. (ya ya, I know i started a thread on this bombing without reading more about it first, mb, feel free to give me sh**)

So this bomb was dropped in response to a Green Beret being killed over there?

I'm sure we'll hear about the Russians dropping their FOAB, a bomb that is 4 times as powerful as the MOAB pretty soon.

It took Trump less than 90 days to go from America-first to warmongering.

Well, hopefully less than that now. I mean, wasn't that the objective?

Sweet, once we completely defund the National Endowment for the Arts, we can make even more.

When does the video come out? I want to see it!
