Dobbs is smart as hell and I know he could learn that playbook fast, but not sure if he would be a fit. He did check all of the 7 rules of Parcells though
One of them might be Bill Parcells' rule for drafting quarterbacks. Parcells is a Hall of Fame coach, and over the last few years his guidelines for drafting at the position have made the rounds. He must be a senior, because you need time and maturity to develop into a good professional quarterback. He must be a graduate, because you want someone who takes his responsibilities seriously. He must be a three-year starter, because you need to make sure his success wasn’t ephemeral and that he has lived as "the guy" for some period of time. He must have at least 23 wins, because the big passing numbers must come in the context of winning games. Quarterbacks who hit all four pieces of criteria (7/14) Peyton Manning(retired) Drew Brees Tony Romo(retired) Russell Wilson Philip Rivers Eli Manning Carson Palmer Quarterbacks who hit three of the four pieces of criteria (2/14) Andrew Luck Matt Ryan Quarterbacks who hit two of the four pieces of criteria (4/14) Tom Brady Joe Flacco Aaron Rodgers Ben Roethlisberger Quarterback who hit one of the four pieces of criteria (1/4) Cam Newton http://www.ganggreennation.com/2016...bill-parcells-rules-for-drafting-quarterbacks
Nice, again it looks at good quarterbacks as a sample size. What about existing quarterbacks in the NFL, even including the backups.
Reading into that article, he only applied those metrics to some guys rankings of the top fourteen quarterbacks in the league, I believe. A more accurate assessment would be to include every quarterback in the league, as I'm sure there are plenty of backups that meet at least three of his criteria. Off the top of my head, I'd imagine Case Keenum meets all four, for instance.
I tried to find all of the other QBs for these rules and I couldn't unfortunately. I did find 26-27-60 rules for QBs:
Is there a QB in this draft they can take at 25 that is the guy they can win with this season? McShay: I don't see it. Knowing what Bill O'Brien looks for in a QB, knowing how important the mental aspect is, knowing what could be available there - Pat Mahomes is 2-3 years away, all the talent in the world; Kizer has a lot of learning to do & figuring out the consistency & working on his mechanics. None of these guys you say they can come in & we can win a championship. Houston is built to win now. They're in a tough spot. They believe in Tom Savage. I don't know if you can win a championship with him but you certainly can't plug in a rookie & go win a championship. Kiper: What Todd was talking yesterday, what Bill O'Brien wants, the QB you're describing to me is Nate Peterman from Pitt. Another Pitt QB like Tom Savage was. Peterman has leadership, mental capability, knowledge of a pro offense, accuracy, ability to be a good starter, big hand, ... Peterman's arm will get better. He's a 2nd round possibility for someone. Who is the Texans QB if not Tom Savage? McShay: I think it's Savage. Would you sign Cutler or Kaepernick? McShay: No. Cutler doesn't fit what he wants. Kaepernick? McShay: Don't think it'll happen for other reasons. I'd take Kaepernick over any other available QBs at this point. ____________________________________ No rookies fit. Cutler doesn't fit. Kaepernick doesn't fit. No one fits. Tom ****ing Brady ain't walking through that door. Nate Peterman - Looks the part.
Nate Peterman IS Tom Savage. I wouldn't take him, unless you're sure he's going to be a player. The two are extremely similar players. And I really like Savage.
Whoa there mother f'ers, you mean to tell me Blaine Gabbert scored a 42 in the wonderlic? well I'll be damned.
This offense is so good that there isn't a QB worthy enough to play in it. This coach is so picky that no one is good enough for him. I never thought I would say this but...I miss Gary Kubiak.
Kubiak & his battlefightin' kids >>>>>>> Asschin "I'm the biggest *******/smartest man in the room" You were the OC for Tom Brady & guided Penn State to two average seasons? Spoiler Would've been the "hottest coaching candidate"? Should've trade his ass. Send him back to the Northeast.
Spoiler http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/71077/71/nfl-draft-needs-texans Texans No. 1 Team Need: Quarterback Silva’s Analysis: This team needed Tony Romo Texans No. 2 Team Need: Offensive Line Silva’s Analysis: Texans OGs Xavier Su’a-Filo and Jeff Allen were major liabilities in 2016. RT Derek Newton tore both of his patellar tendons last October and almost certainly won’t be ready for Week 1. Texans No. 3 Team Need: Defensive Line Silva’s Analysis: While J.J. Watt will return with Christian Covington and D.J. Reader to form a solid threesome up front, the Texans have a depth shortage on the line and must find someone to replace retiring NT Vince Wilfork’s snaps. With John Simon gone to Indy, I also would not be surprised if the Texans pursued a third edge rusher to spell Whitney Mercilus and injury-plagued Jadeveon Clowney. Other Considerations: Outside Linebacker, Defensive Back Norris’ Mock Draft Round 1 (25): T Ryan Ramczyk, Wisconsin - In his one year as a starter, Ramczyk held up against the best pass rushers in the Big Ten each and every week. He is coming off hip surgery, but expect Ramczyk to be drafted in the first round. For the Texans, he would land on the right side. Round 2 (57): QB Davis Webb, Cal - At least one team is pushing Webb’s evaluation. Maybe more. Or maybe he’s this year’s Tom Savage. Webb has a strong arm and is apparently smart. That’s all I’ve got. It is time for the Texans to allow Bill O’Brien to make his choice at quarterback, rather than force his hand. Round 3 (89): CB Shaquill Griffin, UCF - The Texans are heavily invested in three corners on the roster. However, Johnathan Joseph is entering the final year of his deal and A.J. Bouye left for division-rival Jacksonville. Griffin flashes great ball skills and is one of the top athletes in this corner class. Round 4 (130): EDGE Ifeadi Odenigbo, Northwestern - The Texans need another edge rusher for depth. Odenigbo’s primary weapon is working around the outside and taking a tight line to the quarterback, but he also flashes a counter working through his opposition. Round 4 (142): LB James Onwualu, Notre Dame - I see a lesser Benardrick McKinney in Onwualu. Round 5 (169): S Jamal Carter, Miami - K.J. Dillon likely steps into the starting lineup, but that means more depth is necessary. Round 7 (243): OL Justin Senior, Miss State - More depth for the offensive line.
We cant be afraid to take a QB in the 1st rd. .. If he happens to beat out Savage then go with him.. It doesn't happen often that rookie QBs make an impact but it's not impossible either. DRAFT A DAMN QB O'BRIEN!
The problem with that is if you take a QB in the first your almost forced too start him Day 1 and the Texans have very little on that offensive line too protect him. David Carr situation pt.2
I'm not a football coach, just a Texans fan but I don't believe there's any pressure to start a rookie qb if he isn't ready. I think we are just clamoring for them to try and address the issue since above average qb's never/rarely hit the free agent market.
I'm surprised no one has asked/suggested "Should we trade for Richard Sherman?" Spoiler Well, should we?
an old CB that is expensive and declining? Why when there is a draft deep at CB and we all know what happens to Seattle CBs when they leave Seattle?
