Good, maybe at some point there will be enough of them to where they'll make that religion sane and pull away from the extremists.

 

Hopefully their numbers drop for the younger people born.

Change "people" to "Democrats" and I'm sure you are right.....and the reverse is also true. That's largely due to just how polarizing politics have gotten over the last decade or so, partisan Democrats would likely consider Republicans crazier than terrorists and partisan Republicans would probably feel the same way about Democrats. It's a really unhealthy situation.

I feel like it's easier to leave Christianity than Islam

Eventually you will get a mostly non-religious people and then Muslims who seem to lag behind in modern world views.

In some manners, obviously yes. Islam is used by many leaders in Muslim majority nations as a mechanism to control their population. Islam is inherently a very controlling/authoritarian belief system where every aspect of life is unnecessarily governed. Islam creates an environment where people don't critically think for themselves but rather read some stupid hadith on how they should pee. Yes, for majority of people, Islam not existing would be a benefit.

 

I don't think Islam is the main problem in countries such as Pakistan. Lack of education and thus good jobs is the main culprit. That said, Islam can be used in a way to control the masses of uneducated. Eliminating Islam won't magically solve the problems in Pakistan or help achieve peace in the middle east. But it can only help in the long term. As fchowd points out, religious leaders in these countries have so much influence on the daily lives of everyone it really prevents any social progress.

The real change will be the degree to which Muslims born in the West move away from conservative adherence to their religion. Second and third generation Muslims born in the West are already significantly liberal than their parents. Free speech, democracy, and civic participation have eroded the grip of strict Islamic ideology from them.

 

Yup, that's basically what the fundamentalists are worried about. The more Muslims are exposed to "western values" the less likely they are to accept the crazy backwards ways that the extremists would like to enforce. That same kind of thing happened to Christianity already and it neutered most of the really extreme interpretations and the world is a better place for it.
