Hate this reasoning. 1) We gave up a mid to late 2nd most likely and are going to get a bottom of the 3rd as a comp pick. That's not close to comparable in value 2) It wasn't one or the other. We could have had a 2 AND the comp pick. Now we just have one.
1. I didn't say they were the same or were close. Just that it doesn't feel as bad. Now that teams can trade comp picks, the Texans could very well trade back into the 2nd round. It's obviously not the same, but it softens the blow. 2. It is relevant because if they picked up Romo, it would have affected what comp picks they get. If the Texans roll the cap space over to next year, they will just have traded a 2nd round rookie for the ability to signed a veteran free agent. 2nd round rookie vs vet. You know what would have been really bad? If they couldn't afford to keep Hopkins. You know what else would have been really bad? Trading a pick for Romo only to see him retire anyway. I don't see how today changes anything about the Brock deal. If you thought it was bad to give up a 2nd round pick then, then you should think so now. If you thought it was a good deal then, you should think so now. Romo was never a guarantee.
No team was going to trade for Romo and have him retire. The Texans would have spoken with Romo and found out his intentions, before completing any deal. All that would have happened is the Texans would have found out Romo was retiring weeks ago and been able to address weaknesses in free agency; or would have Romo as their QB now. Yeah, losing the second rounder is bad. The Texans can roll over the cap space for next season, but even with the cap space, their window isn't forever. At some point soon it is likely to close. The Texans front office and ownership always seem to be behind the curve.
I don't see the Texans bringing in Kaep or Cutler seeing they have no QBs under contract next year so they are for sure taking a QB in the draft this year. That way they can save even more money with that rookie contract to sign Clowney and Hopkins
It certainly puts a QB in the first round on the table....which probably means that they are planning on punting this season and hoping to be in a better spot this time next year.
or God forbid, they trade up really high in the draft and don't have Day 1 or Day 2 picks for the next two drafts
i think they do bring in a vet but not necessarily kaep or jay. right now we are sitting at savage/weeden/rookie.
I'm willing to bet almost anything that we don't draft a QB in the 1st round. We haven't drafted a QB on the first day of the draft since David Carr. We'll probably draft someone around the 4th or 5th and just "coach him up" like we always do. Then we'll see tweets from people like Lance Z at training camp saying how great he looks and what a steal he was and how Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round, blah blah blah....and we'll get Tom Savage all over again.
Yeah that's just about worst case scenario IMO. They fall in love with one of the scrub QB's from this class and move up to get the next RG3 and REALLY screw the team going forward.
Right. Because it is impossible for him to show up in training camp and be like "I don't feel like doing this no more". Or for him to become a Texan and CBS/Fox increase the money in the offer to him. Since retirement was already in the back of his mind, this would have always been an option. Jerry Jones just forced him into that decision now. The Texans spent big money last year in free agency. They have key players coming back from injury this year. I don't think they were ever going to be big players in free agency; with the exception of getting a starting QB. They might be behind the curve but the other teams in the division are even further behind the curve. It's funny that the people crying that they should have overpaid for players in free agency this year are the same crying because they overpaid for the free agents last year. Would you be happy if they kept Bouye and watched him regress to his norm? They signed two guards in free agency last year they we want off the team; if they signed some more this year you'll be saying the same thing next year.
2018 FA QBs (plus age of QB as of next offseason) Drew Brees (39) Kirk Cousins (29) Sam Bradford (30) Matt Stafford (30) Derek Carr (27) Jimmy Garrapolo (26) Clearly all of these guys won't be FAs by then, but Drew Brees on a 1-2 year contract sounds fun.
What in the world does this mean and, more importantly, how does it translate to winning football games?
It means we'd get some seriously hot takes from Skippy B and Screamin' A in addition to hearing local chucklef***s on the radio go on and on about him disrespecting 'Murica.
Do you really believe that Tony Romo would lead on the Texans if he wanted or was considering retirement? That is a real stretch. What would have happened is that the Texans would have found out his intentions weeks ago had they been negotiating with the Cowboys and had spoken to Romo. Do you really believe that the Texans sent a second rounder to Cleveland to clear cap space with the intent of rolling it over until next year? Is it a coincidence that the Texans did nothing in free agency during this whole time waiting for Romo to be released? I don't and I don't think many people do. The old "the rest of the division is dumber than us" argument. It means NOTHING. The Texans winning a putrid division year after year doesn't make them any closer to being a contender. It PR spin used by ownership and the front office to justify being mediocre to the fan base. Sometimes it works and some times it doesn't. For all either one of us knows, Tom Savage may morph into a Kirk Cousins clone and lead the Texans to a 12-4 record and nearly a Super Bowl bid. Fortunes change and sometimes a team has a good draft or two and they are knocking on the door for the Super Bowl. However, the Texans have a track record under McNair and Smith of doing some very odd and dumb things. They have a track record of blaming the head coach and saving the GM. The owner has a track record of falling back on the comments of his fellow owners when evaluating his own team and their performance. There is no real accountability within the organization.
