Sad. Unfortunately, too common. For some reason, 2016 saw a big spike in incidents (hello cool apps?). 40k death, 2.5M injured, 430Billion in cost due to traffic incidents last year. With 260M cars in US, that's an avg of $2000 per vehicle.

The next leap in traffic safety will be when we have semi to full self-driving automation in vehicles.

"Law enforcement does not know whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. Deputies did find a beer can in the Durango."

We're getting cars with a lot of that tech thl. Cars that brake when getting too close, blind side warnings, etc., are on the roads more these days. I think another cause could be more vehicles on the road due to the good economy.

I keep thinking this extra tech will cause more negligence initially, like someone who uses the braking feature as an excuse to use their phone but eventually when it reaches full autonomous on most cars on the road it's definitely going to be welcomed knowing you won't have to worry about the idiot who's texting/driving or the drunk who decided to drive etc. Obviously there could be other concerns (hacks etc) but this **** happens too often now and we see it a lot more with the amount of vehicles on the road and reporting/recording techniques. So if we could fast forward the beta/trial phase that'd be great!

I love working on cars w/ conventional engines and driving them but life changes way too fast for innocent people. I'm good at tech so I can adapt my hobby, hoping to mess around with a Tesla soon... I dunno I just love fixing all my own stuff.

Skimmed through the main CF page and saw "NSFW: Violent Thre" as last hangout thread. This thread title didn't pan out as I thought it would.

And Austin. I know they got rid of the booths on the Hardy and there aren't any on most of the other toll roads around the city...but they still heavily fine you for using them w/o a tag.

I can't imagine how that toll booth operator goes back in there. They and the drivers of the Durango and the pick-up are extraordinarily lucky to be alive. But it definitely goes to show you that it can all end in a heartbeat and you might never even see it coming. That poor person in the Buick was likely just on their way home, fumbling through their car looking for change and then it was all over.
