I think you're looking at the Brock deal way too narrowly - do you honestly believe it was a strictly a salary cap move?
Or... the removal of what they viewed as a toxic situation. We now have a track record of Osweiler acting entitled, first in Denver, then late last year during the Tennessee game. He needed to be removed.
I'm not buying that. He sucks as a QB, bench him. He does something against team rules, suspend him. He acts entitled, demote him to 3rd string. "Acting entitled" isn't some huge distraction that requires a costly trade. Who is he, Adrian Peterson or Ray Rice? He never committed a crime. He never showed up late, never fought with teammates either. This post trade character assassination is disgusting to me. The Texans are at fault for signing him, just own it. If you want to get rid of him, wait patiently or give him up for a conditional 7th rounder. Don't hurt yourself in the process
Lol. You really fell for the propaganda the Texans spewed? Smith and especially O'Brien are guilty of using the media to protect their images and/or make themselves look good. You can rightly criticize Brock for his play on the field but almost all of his teammates have spoken highly of the guy. Besides one mans "entitled" is another mans "competitive." I highly doubt he would have been a cancer had he been relegated to being the back up this year.
I have zero issue with the Texans signing Brock Osweiler. I've never criticized the move, even in hindsight. Never, ever - not once. Five years from now, I'll support. Not the results but the idea behind it. Wholly defensible. And frankly, I don't really care *why* they traded him - but Brock throwing a tantrum about being benched rings true given that the last time he was benched, he threw such a tantrum, it led him here. A tantrum-throwing QB at odds with the head coach has the potential to crater a locker room. You're foolish to believe otherwise. The Texans obviously had an urgency, be it their level of frustration or their desire to make room for Romo - who knows? All these Johnny-Knowitalls who have the team's inner workings figured out know jackshit.
No one looks good in this scenario... If he was screaming at BOB during halftime of a game about being benched.... I'm guessing the Texans didn't see a future of rainbows and sunshine given how bad he was last year. Funny; many people here push this idea that the Texans are slow to react (David Carr, Gary Kubiak, Matt Schaub...) - but when they do something decisively to stop the bleeding from an obviously poor decision... they're suddenly cutthroat, media-manipulating crybabies.... The Osweiler signing was a disaster. Whatever the inner workings of their relationship, it made no sense to bring him back next year.
Eh, this supposed tantrum was leaked by the bob camp. O'Brien seems to be the common denominator in these blowups And even so, it's just not worth trading away a second rounder. That is just too valuable of an asset
There could be 70+ people in an NFL locker room at any given time - owners, league officials, coaches, players, media, ball boys........ Here's someone we know is NOT in the locker room: fans glued to their couch spewing conspiracy theories on a message board. We don't know who the leak is. They gain immediate and long-term cap relief; that has value. Even if Tony Romo retires tomorrow, they'll be able to carry that money over to next year and have no further Osweiler-related obligations. That's significant and the Browns (smartly) made them pay for it. But it's not as if they gave the second rounder away. AND... if they do land Romo, it'll have been worth it.
The conspiracy theory is that Brock was some awful person that needed to be traded asap. You're just as much on the couch speculating as anyone else here. And it doesn't create long term cap room. It's$10 mil this year and $6 mil next year. You could have opened the same amount by not resigning Griffin and cutting some other player. And Romo isn't here yet and we aren't using the capspace The only valuable asset in this whole thing is the second round pick
No one called him an "awful person." But BOB has to manage that locker room and if he thought Brock's presence next year presented a problem - be it performance and/or attitude - they were smart to cut bait. Why is that so difficult to swallow? You can carryover the unused cap room from this year to next - they've created a more favorable financial situation. Yet. He's likely never here if they hadn't created the cap space.
Because it's stupid! He can't manage the locker room because there's a guy on the roster who feels entitled? That is seriously a joke. I don't care that they traded him. I care that we have up a 2nd rounder. That easily more than offsets the small amount of caproom we created (and aren't even using). It is hard to swallow because draft picks are hugely important to building a winning team And like I said, we could have done a trade like this if or when Romo comes available. Cleveland is hungry for picks, a smart front office could have waited. Alternatively we could have created the capspace by other means
Well no wonder we passed up on Bridgewater, Carr, Garropolo, Lynch and Prescott. And no wonder he won't give Savage a chance even though he looked far better than Brock.
Outside of J.J. Watt, Brock was the highest-paid player with the largest profile; you don't want that guy disgruntled, which would have likely been heightened had they signed Tony Romo with Osweiler still here. Osweiler had the potential to undermine BOB and poison the well for Romo. That's a bad situation and most teams - well-run teams - are smart to jettison such players. The Patriots do it on a near annual basis. Look, it's was ultimately a dumpster fire of a deal. And yes, having to trade a valuable pick to wipe away the mistake hurts. But a trade allowed them to maximize the most amount of cap room possible. Not even a June 1 designation saved near as much as the trade did. Not only did it free up $7MM this year, it wiped out any future financial obligation. AND if they don't use that $7MM, it rolls over to next year. Could they have created cap space another way? Sure. But then you're cutting guys that might still have value (depth and experience has value). Brock Osweiler had no value to this team: he performed terribly, clashed with the coach & the team (reportedly) wants to bring in Tony Romo. There's no reason to keep him around.
