White Supremacist Charged With Terrorism Over Murder Of Black Man

Authorities in New York have charged a white supremacist from Baltimore with terrorism over the murder of a black man last week.

Police say 28-year-old James Jackson of Baltimore traveled to New York City specifically to kill black men.

It was a plan he carried out on Monday, stabbing 66-year-old Timothy Caughman to death on a public street corner, police say.

The Associated Press reports that Caughman was remembered "as a gentleman and a good neighbor."

Caughman "was alone and collecting bottles for recycling last week when he was attacked from behind with a sword," the AP writes. "He staggered, bleeding, into a police station and later died at a hospital."

Authorities say that Jackson, who turned himself in to police after the murder, is a member of a white supremacist group, NPR's Joel Rose reports.

"Police say he took a bus from Baltimore to New York specifically to get more media coverage for the act, and picked Caughman at random," Joel says.

"Jackson was already charged with murder," Joel notes. "Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance is bringing additional charges, including murder as an act of terrorism and murder as a hate crime."

The terror charges were announced on Monday.

In an interview from jail, Jackson told a reporter from the New York Daily News that he wanted to kill a number of black men, with the idea that the attack might somehow make white women decide not to have interracial relationships.

He said that his military training helped him form his plans. The AP reports that Jackson was in the Army from 2009 to 2012, and was deployed to Afghanistan.

The murder of Caughman was meant to be a "practice run" for this larger plot, but he got "depressed" after the killing, Jackson said.

In the interview, Jackson was sometimes "boasting of his white supremacy," and at other times "appeared dejected by society's rejection of his violent, racist message," the Daily News writes.

Vance, the district attorney bringing the terror and hate crime charges, says that Jackson's objective was to "launch a campaign of terrorism" against New York City and its values.

"Last week, with total presence of mind, he acted on his plan, randomly selecting a beloved New Yorker solely on the basis of his skin color, and stabbing him repeatedly and publicly on a Midtown street corner," Vance said.

"James Jackson wanted to kill black men, planned to kill black men, and then did kill a black man."

Obviously, this must be terrorism planned while Obama was President.

No mention of Islam or ISIS. Clearly an oversight from the socialists at NPR.

But in the months before the attack, Jackson’s internet use suggested recent radicalization by the alt-right. Jackson’s YouTube page, where he had previously listened to the Final Fantasy soundtrack and liked a British royal family video, lit up with likes on videos about white superiority and “black on white crimes”.

The Daily Beast verified the YouTube account’s username as being associated with Jackson’s email address he listed on a résumé posted to his LinkedIn profile.

Jackson liked a livestream video called “Is It Time for Whites to Start Voicing Their Displeasure With Black on White Crimes?” two months before the attack. The two-hour video characterized African Americans as violent, and featured musical interludes of Donald Trump speeches set to electronic music. -- The Daily Beast

Musical interludes of Donald Trump speeches set to electronic music would be enough to drive any sane, rational person into a killing spree? Color me unsurprised.

Time to put countries that cater to the alt-right on the no-fly list.

Na, I think it is time to put 100% of FBI resources on Muslim terrorism.

I think we need to look at the followers of the Christian religion with fresh eyes. Christians seem all nice and friendly, but once those church doors get shut on Sunday they become terrorism plotting manics. You might also noticed that Christians have not seriously denounced this crime.

    I'm just saying.

This person and Dylann Roof kills in the name of white race, what should we do? I believe we should find ways to stop Muslim terrorists, but we should also keep watch on alt right groups, they could be very dangerous as well. There might be more of these type of acts now that president Trump is in power as more alt right feel emboldened to act out.

I'm not sure what the definition of alt right is because it means whatever the liberals want it to mean but at least for the moment I think the following are true.

    white supremacist <> alt right
    racist <> alt right

    just like

    terrorist <> muslim

I don't know whether he or did not.

I do know that some white supremacists (like the KKK) consider themselves Christians. They find motivation for their racist behavior in the Bible. Being Christian is part of their self identity.

Most Christians I know are appalled by white supremacists and do not defend them and actively disagree with their interpretation of the Bible.

This is a case of sneaky terrorism. People don't think that lunch pail Americans can be terrorists but they are wrong.

It's certainly an interesting charge. The hate crime aspect of it is clear, but has there been precedent for this terrorism charge before? Like would a serial killer or serial rapist now be charged with terrorism charges? Have gang crimes been prosecuted as terrorism? Should we start to classify drug cartels as terrorist organizations? I'm getting a bit off topic, but it's interesting to me.

Even beyond that can the govt declare American citizens to be terrorists if they are planning a crime similar to this? Can they simply declare a group of American citizens to be a terrorist organization? Like any of those militia groups in rural America or any of those groups shutting down highways for protests or Antifa and Trump marchers who are live action role playing in the streets.

I don't think shutting down the freeways warrants somebody being labeled a terrorist. As for the militia groups, I think it depends on their actions. If they plan on using violence to reach their goals, I would say they could be labeled as a terrorist organization. If they plan on simply occupying offices or lands, then I would say they shouldn't be labeled as terrorist organizations. The grey area where it's tricky is when they have an armed occupation of offices and lands. That in itself isn't violent, but if at any point they plan on using violence to stop the government from doing their job to arrest/evict them, even if they don't actually use violence then it would make sense to label them as terrorist organizations.

What I've said isn't really helpful as it isn't official policy, but my own personal feelings.
