Connor Barwin and TJ McDonald are still available. Jared Cook maybe? Blount? They only have 7 picks and ideally they should be targeting QB, RT, CB, SS, ILB, OLB, FS, and RB. They don't have enough picks to address all those needs and you have to assume at best only 4 or 5 of them will contribute this year. They can't depend on the draft to fill all these spots. They need FAs.
4 or 5 contributors from the draft? Maybe if you are counting special teams. Right now they need a STARTER at RT and S. The rest they conceivable use internal candidates for mediocre results I suppose. Honestly though you are mediocre at best at both guard spots, have no start at RT, are missing a starter at S (and needed to upgrade that anyway), have no RB depth of note, have poor coverage LBs, are down a part of the pass rushing rotation...oh, and can only hope for mediocre QB play from Savage. I'm with you. They NEED to use free agency to improve. Hate to be in that spot, but that's what happens when you don't do a good job filling out better than mediocre depth over the years in the draft.
There's still a lot of time left. There will be a ton more cuts after June 1st. No need to rush into signing people for the sake of it.
You said we need a RT and there are none left in free agency...as if we've run out of time and were screwed. Lots of free agents to-be out there.
Yeah but you need RT, and safety, and QB, and CB. You take RT in the 2nd round and you don't have one of the other positions. One of those starters need to be in FA. And you can't ALWAYS count on getting starters from other team's cast offs.
This team is better than its fans give it credit for. It's just lacking a quarterback The plan is still the same. Sign Romo, get a future QB in the first, tackle in the second, tight end, corner, or safety in the third, another of those three in the fourth. The team likes Corey Moore. He'll probably start with Hal. Plus, we have young safeties as well. We may not even draft one. If we do, it'll be a hybrid like Peppers. The main positions of need, besides tackle and quarterback, are deep in those areas. Thus, we have to take them in the first two rounds. If we do sign Romo, maybe we don't take a QB, though I still would. There are some tackles that will be decent in the second round. Moron is one, in particular. This team is in a better position than people give it credit for.
Who would you have wanted that was available at RT? Would you have been okay with spending almost 10 million per year for someone like Wagner? Anyone that is good was commanding lots of money that hurts our flexibility moving forward. There weren't an abundance of solid starting RTs to choose from at reasonable prices, unfortunately. I think using the draft for RT seems like the best option given that we need to save up money to retain Hopkins and Clowney.
Right which is what i said already. I said we were going to have to draft a right tackle and you said plenty of free agents still
Our lack of FA moves makes it obvious that we're likely to sign Romo. Jerrah is screwing it up by hanging on to Romo instead of "doing right" as he said he would.
Okay.... I was mostly addressing your concern that we don't have a RT and there are none left in free agency. My point is that there is plenty of time and opportunity ahead of us to fill that need.
I'm still holding out hope that Mahomes is there. If not, we go tackle in the first and the Pitt QB in the second
I really don't think so. It's not a very good OT draft class so if you are waiting till the late 2nd, there likely won't be someone who can come in and start right away which is what you need.
Yes, we can. There are a couple of immediately capable right tackles, that can equal Newton, that will be available in the second. I'd look for Taylor Moton and Antonio Garcia. I really like Moton.
