Terrence Ross isn't comparable to Ariza. He's started 0 games this year and 7 last year. He plays 22 mpg. He's more like a Dekker with less upside since he's on year 5. They didn't overpay imo. Still a risk he won't resign but they didn't overpay.
Raps have Kobe? Price for Ibaka indicates he's NOT DEEMED WORTHY OF WHAT HE'LL BE ASKING FOR IN FA. Just sayin'...
Jonas V. has to be available now, I don't see him getting much PT, esp. Ibaka, Pat, Carrol, Lowry, Demar, that's the lineup that will kill most teams
That would have been true for any team that traded for Ibaka, but a lot of teams didn't want to take the risk apparently. Toronto had Lowry's bird rights when he was a free agent last time and we would have gotten him if we weren't chasing Melo. I don't think Toronto would have made the trade unless they were fairly confident that he would re-sign, it's happened before including in our favor. The Lakers had Dwight's bird rights with the ability to offer an extra year with higher raises and he still chose us. I was pessimistic that Dwight would choose us then too. I'm just saying it's possible if mutual interest is there. Things are in our favor. We have the Harden connection, no state income taxes, and Toronto's future is up in the air. If Lowry leaves in free agency for his hometown Philly, do they even max out Ibaka? Lots of possibilities out there.
i agree, but this goes for any FA... with the numbers that can be thrown at a player, there's almost no chance any of them will live up to that contract... look at conley in memphis... he's definitely not worth 150 million, but that's what the above average nba player gets... it's just something teams will have to deal with going forward
Seems like the Raptors should move a big. Patrick Patterson, maybe. Nogueira, depending on who they get back (they have about four guys now who can play center, although one of them is a rookie)?
How you know he won't resign there? Alot of his people live out there. Toronto have a sprawling African population. He'll feel right at home when he get to know the area. Then again, I'm hoping he hates the cold and high taxes, and come back down South, to my Rox. At least to have a meeting with our guys....and give Codman a re-do to make another prediction that time around. Haha.
No idea. I said still a risk... which it is. Maybe he likes it there, maybe he prefers warm weather, who knows. Just pointing out its a risk, but you have to trade SOMETHING to get something back, and overall Terrence Ross plus the lesser of the Raptors two 1st rounders (theirs or Clippers) doesn't seem like a lot to give up, so its a good trade for them. Also, kind of off-putting to say "a lot of his people live there" ... has a racial undertone to it, imo.
I didn't mean it that way. Kent Bazemore even turned down the Rockets because the city wasn't "demographic" enough like Georgia. Go figure. I'm just relaying how these guys think and see things.
Ross has not started because Carroll is a better player than him and Ariza both. That's not indicative of his ability to produce. He's a 26 year old average defender and a good 3pt shooter locked up for 2.5 seasons on a decent contract. Plus their draft pick is 4-5 spots better than ours and likely to stay that way. The packages are definitely comparable, even though I think Ariza is the better player. They definitely overpaid imo. Even if he has already agreed to re-sign with them, that would mean they paid Ross and a #20ish pick to get him 3 months sooner. My view of the situation is, Orlando wouldn't be in the position they're in if his production was worth the kind of risk Toronto is taking. All subjective though. Let's see what happens.
Funny. I've been to Atlanta, which is, yes, a very African-American city (it was the definition of white flight awhile back; don't know how much that has changed). But if Kent Bazemore believed what you're writing, then he hasn't seen much of Houston.
This and I know that some teams believe his game has shown signs of decline. I will make a prediction though, several teams will pay players worse than Ibaka, more than Ibaka gets this summer IF Ibaka signs early.
All true IMO. Also true IMO is that IF JH13 had wanted SI as a Rock that was a price DM the GM would have paid.
Carroll was injured last year and Ross still didn't start for the most part. He doesn't start because he's not a starter in this league. Ariza is... albeit I'd agree with anyone that notes he's an aging starter with obvious limitations who you'd like to have off the bench. You have to give something to get something. Orlando can always value to cap room in the alternative scenario. If I think of what it would take to get Ibaka before this trade went down, as many on here obviously did, a ho-hum package of Ross and a mid/late 20's pick is in line, if not less than what many on here thought Orlando would get. Ross is an ok bench player who might be maximized as a 3&D player in the right system but pretty non-descript on the whole. Sure, its Ross + a late 20's pick for 3 months of Ibaka. But also for being in the driver seat on Ibaka resigning... which doesn't mean it will happen, or that it should happen, but that they are in the drivers seat. I would not have offered Ariza + our pick, but I would have offered Dekker + our pick, or Harrel + our pick. But I'm not heartbroken that it didn't happen. That said, if I felt VERY good about Ibaka resigning, AND was somehow able to offload Brewer as well, I "might" have offered Ariza+Brewer+1st for Ibaka+Jodie Meeks. Meeks is also a free agent, so in effect you'd be clearing about $16 million of cap space for the offseason, and you could potentially keep Ibaka's rights while chasing a max or near max free agent, then resign Ibaka. Say if I felt great about Ibaka resigning and I had a fighting chance for Hayward, and could envision a team of PBev, Harden, Hayward, Ibaka, Capela, Gordon, Anderson, Dekker, Harrell for next year. But all of those IF's obviously were a huge long shot and not true!
Lol wtf is going on. "Sprawling black community, he'll feel right at home". Seriously... Anyways, sucks. Wished we could have got him but we obviously could have beaten that package and didn't so here's to hoping Moray made the right move. Having to pay Ibaka with Anderson/Capela would have been nuts so probably a good move. Here's to getting Gallo or someone else nice instead!
I watch a lot of Raptors and I can tell you that Ross is a better defender, shooter, and athlete than Carroll. Ever since coming to Toronto Carroll has fallen off a cliff. His percentages dropped big time and he's become slow defensively, which may be a result of injuries. I don't think Toronto overpaid at all. It's not "just 3 months sooner", Ibaka gives the Raptors a legitimate run at the ECF again. Also, they would not have the cap space to pursue him in free agency. The bird rights will allow them to sign him in free agency when they otherwise would not have been able to.
