From my recollection, Nene has pushed for another big man. I think a 4/5 he can defend and score is most optimal but Nene may be retiring sooner than later as he's had a pretty long career.
I respect Chandler's game and he's still a great rebounder, but he's not what we need at that price tag. A 34 year old backup center making 13m/year? Why? Does he make us better than Golden State? Does he fulfill a need or would be just be nice to have? We are a hot destination again. Preserve cap space to chase after Gordon Hayward. After he declines and returns to Utah, we chase after Gallinari, who would fit in perfectly in our system and has the Italian connection with D'antoni. Bottom line, we need an upgrade to our starting lineup, not extra depth at a position we're already three deep at.
My counter argument would be that we could platoon the Center position. Capela maybe more valuable to us with a year left on a rookie deal by merely letting him go or trading him if Nanu is ready to give us enough minutes to platoon with Chandler and maybe Nene. That would keep the cost low for the Center position to focus on the wing or another ball handler. Price aside, I think Chandler fits with this team like a glove. Great PNR player under D'Antoni, still a good rebounder, I think he can give us at least +26 solid minutes, hard worker with a lot pride, and probably wanting to ride out his last contract on a team with a contending window. I bet his defensive numbers pick if he were to come here as well. However, I certainly have higher aspirations than getting Chandler but it's worth to consider.

Tyson>Serge. Chandler would cure any defense deficiency and get rebounds. His best asset is shot selection, he will not take shots from our go-to guys. And if he does shoot which is rare, it will be in high FG pct. As much as I like his potential for the Rockets, his biggest drawback is similar to Eric Gordon. He is oft-injured, but if he plays, he will make the Rockets better. I would not trade any of the Rockets player with time on the court except Brewer.
We only have Capela and Nene now to play C. Maybe I'm living in 2 years ago, but Chandler is still rebounding at an amazing rate and I think he is a better defender than Capela.

Dude is a terrible rim protector now and will only get worse. His rebounding is nice but not good enough to offset losing Clint Anderson Harrell and can't believe I'm saying this brewer. Chandler is old bro In his 16th year and is still owed a lot of money for 2 more years after this one. Your living in the past, he's not that guy anymore. His rebounding numbers are good but it's also inflated because he plays on a bad Suns team that has poor bigs around him. He's avg .5 blocks a game in almost 30min, That's terrible. He's not a game changer and Capela is better now and going foward at a fraction of the cost for this season and next.
How does acquiring Chandler and platooning at center keep our costs low for the position? Chandler makes three times more than Capela, Nene, and Harrell combined, both this year and next. Also, I'm not comfortable platooning with two 34 year olds on the decline. If Clint is gone it needs to be for an upgrade. Chandler's high salary and age are huge concerns. Not only will he decline the next two years, but his salary would prevent us from chasing a free agent this summer, the only summer we'll have meaningful cap space.
The only valid reason for opposing Tyson Chandler is because of the two years remaining on his contract and the potential to screw up our free agency plans. Because otherwise this is precisely the type of player borderline contenders target. Experienced veteran with no chemistry issues that's an elite rebounder and somebody you can depend on.
