In general, this game did not make me feel like Ibaka is worth $32m per season. He had an excellent offensive game, but it was one of his best of the season and only 3 shy of his season high. Anderson is more capable of dropping 28 than Ibaka. Ibaka generally puts up 15.2 points on 12.6 shots, which is not better than Anderson's 13.7 on 10.8 shots. More importantly, the way Anderson gets his points (3's) is far more beneficial to the team than the way Ibaka gets his points, because it creates more spacing for Harden, which tells me Anderson is clearly the better offensive player on the Rockets. It's Ibaka's defense that I'm interested in and he was not really noticeable in that regard. He is undoubtedly a better defensive player than Anderson, but how much better? Even with Biyombo inside and Ibaka at PF and a defensive minded head coach, these guys struggled to keep us out of the paint. Straight up, I would swap Anderson for Ibaka of course, but I'm not sure if giving Ibaka $32m is wise. I'm already concerned about Anderson making $20m per for the next 3 years, what about Ibaka making $32m per for the next 4 while we don't have a second star? Capela is no DeAndre Jordan but he is a good defender for now. Nothing notable, but he is good and developing. I don't believe in the system where the C anchors the defense and everyone funnels drives towards them, I think those days are over in the NBA for the most part. The Warriors succeeded defensively by pairing Bogut/Green and Green/Barnes depending on matchups. It even allowed them to hide Curry's atrocious defense while Klay and Barnes/Iggy harassed the 2 best perimeter players. I think that model can work very well for us. You need your interior guys to be versatile and co-operate to make life difficult inside, and you need to make shooters very uncomfortable without fouling them. Just thinking out loud here, but I'm on the fence. I think Morey is making the right call by waiting till the summer on Ibaka. It's not such a clear call or so much of an upgrade that you should rush into this. We don't have 3-4 years to wait, but we definitely have 6 months. Capela/Ibaka/Anderson trio would be deadly if we can pull it off, and it's VERY possible. I want Harden guarding F's more often than G's so as much as I love Ariza, the play this summer might be to sign Ibaka outright by trading Ariza and Brewer (to clear cap space) and trading for the SG version (hopefully slightly younger) of Ariza using Harrell/Dekker/1st rounder/2nd rounder. Who is the next Avery Bradley? Morey will have to find another gem like he did with Ariza with this super cheap contract, but that's one thing Morey is great at doing. We're going to have to take a risk, but it's in an area we excel at and the reward is worth it.
Ariza is going nowhere. Love Bradley but we just don't have enough. A package of decker, harrell and picks for Bradley would be first degree statutory. He's on arguably the best contract in the league for 2 more years and he's putting up career numbers. Ainge is the last guy Morey would be able to fleece in that type of deal. On the other hand I'm 100% on board with Ibaka and we should sign him in free agency depending on the #s
Assuming we do trade for him (Harrell would be a part of it), how do you envision him fitting? Does he come off the bench? Or do we sit Anderson or Capela? Does he bring us closer to GS/Cleveland level? What would we still need?
would picks, Harrell, KJ and Brewer get it done? I think him being a rental really hurts his trade value.
I hope we keep and develop Capela and Harrell, and MDa starts giving KJ Brewer's minutes. If this team gets after it on defense, we can beat anyone.
Depends on how many picks. I could see the Magic going for that if no other team makes a better offer. But unless Ibaka makes it clear to the league that he'll only resign in a few select places(like Dragic did a couple years ago), I can't imagine some other ballclub won't top that trio of players.
Pelton: Pacers get Serge protection Indiana Pacers get: Forward Serge Ibaka Orlando Magic get: Guard Rodney Stuckey, forward Lavoy Allen, Indiana's 2018 first-round pick (lottery protected) The Pacers certainly aren't an obvious destination for Ibaka, given that their starting frontcourt of Myles Turner and Thaddeus Young has been solid this season. But in trying to figure out how to upgrade their struggling second-team frontcourt, I hit on the idea of bringing in Ibaka to play with both Turner and Young, as well as backup center Al Jefferson. His floor spacing would be useful to open things up for Indiana's perimeter duo of Paul George and Jeff Teague. Given the Magic gave up a lottery pick and a solid young prospect (Victor Oladipo) for Ibaka just eight months ago, this price would be a steal for the Pacers, who also get out of the final season of Stuckey's contract. Yet I'm not sure Orlando will do much better for Ibaka, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, unless the Celtics and Raptors join the bidding. Rockets equivalent?: Brewer(and/or McDaniels), Harrell, 1st round pick
Teams like Toronto and Sacramento should be all over him, at least if they cannot have Millsap. If you put Trez in the deal, i think this Rockets offer is way better than what Pelton is proposing (assuming it's a credible offer).
The problem is I can't see Ibaka wanting to stay in Sactown. That organization is completely dysfunctional and it's possible Cousins might not be there much longer. Unless Ibaka only cares about getting paid(and I've never gotten that impression with him), he'll wanna go to a winner. Toronto would fit the bill, although I'm not sure what they'd offer Orlando. Montrezl would be a great piece for the Magic and I'd give him up in a heartbeat in exchange for Ibaka. Ibaka is older, but he's still only 27 which is the same age as Harden. These guys could be a tandem(again) for many more years.
measurements listed online isn't as accurate as you may think especially when it comes to strength. Ibaka >
I would personally start Ibaka and Capela and send Ryno back to his original role off the bench to pair with Gordon. As to Ibaka bringing us closer to GS/CLE He's definitely a step in the right direction. I think this move would allow us to give anybody a tough competitive series. Let's be honest here without a legit super team nobody is overthrowing GS until they collapse(meaning the big 4 gets too expensive.) So the best anyone can do or hope for in the meantime is put together the best roster possible to be next in line.
That would be ridiculously cheap. It would take a 1st or Harrell to damn near make up for Brewers contract. Considering how late our 1st would be this year I'd be fine with giving up two 1st in that package, one this draft and a lotto protected 2019. I just can't see other teams not beating that, or Orlando not wanting more after gifting away Oladipo and a lotto pick. I guess it comes down to where Ibaka would re-sign.
He is playing in a really ineffecient offense in Orlando. If he were to come here he would be our stretch 5. A bigger Nene. We have to find of look at it in a sense that Nene became really effecient from going from Washington to Houston. So in this Houston offense ibaka adds about a solid screen setter and a big body at the rim. He could avg 20/15 as a rocket.. 15 rebs due to 60% of 3s missing a game. Also he would really help us when we play a good center. Because when we playba great front line like Utah, Memphis, SA has i almost know we are going to struggle because of the fact that capela, nene, harrell are awful defenders. Ibaka is an elite shot blocker but the cons are i do feel he is a stat padder for his blocks. He always makes a pose after every block
People have reported Ibaka to possibly be in his early 30s. And if I'm Morey I get Harden to do some digging before I outright sign or trade for him.
If the Magic were dumb enough to trade for Ibaka in the first place knowing he could bolt after one season, then they're dumb enough to give him up for that proposed package with Harrell as the centerpiece.
If you think that Ibaka is the type of player who can dictate where he wants to be traded to, you are sorely mistaken. That is something reserved for superstars, something that Ibaka is far from. He might have some feedback, but ultimately he will be traded to whoever the Magic feels like they can get the best deal for. The Dwight Howard trade was one where Orlando largely won in comparison to the other teams. They got Affalo (who I would love to have), Vucevick (who I would love to have as well), a HUGE trade exception, first rounder, and 2nd rounder. This translates to 2 good players, a TE that really helps a team, and multiple picks for a petulant superstar COMING OFF BACK SURGERY that left his best days behind him. Whether or not he was still in his prime⦠well that is your opinion, but I disagree with it. Holiday as a 11M expiring and decent PG is largely negated by the terrible, terrible player and mediocre contract that is Brewer. Dekker is basically a rookie who has shown flashes of being solid to good, but not much else and essentially slaughtered their front court. The first rounder MIGHT be intriguing though. Point is, Magic can do much better with Ibaka, both as a good role player and 11M expiring contract.
