They got off lightly...but I'm happy the Astros were compensated. Good news.

Now Lunhow can make a deal knowing he has 2 extra picks to restock the farm.

Of course last year, the Cards had 3 firsts and this is the year they give us their picks. SMH

Seems like a punishment to appease both the Cardinals and the Astros. Should have been more money and higher draft picks.

Wonder if Luhnow continues his flexible approach to ink another HS player with sign-ability questions. I don't know anything about this year's draft prospects, but our slots could make for a nice haul.

I could also see Luhnow using a good portion of those slots on NCAA players, especially if we trade for a TOR.

Good thing they signed Dexter Fowler and thus avoided having a (potentially) higher pick that could have gone to the 'stros (#19 overall)....

So...this situation clearly played a role in STL signing a FA with a rejected qualifying offer, right? I mean, STL had to have known they were going to lose the pick regardless, might as well add a top tier FA.

I wonder if they signed Fowler in anticipation of this penalty...

In the very least, I think they should have made the punishment a first round pick, delaying part of the punishment until 2018.

Reckon prison time and penalties are strong enough to deter hacking in the future. And encourage more security around the league. Glad the Astros won and the Cards take a hit.

Now we just need to give out more passwords and set up a fake ground control to lure in more dirty birds trying to even the score.

Corporate espionage .....FBI involved...With the world watching, MLB's feet should have been held to the fire...Without precedent..an example should have been set. The hypocrisy and corruption knows no bounds. THIS illustrates why I stayed away from our national pastime/my first love for so long...truly sad commentary on the state of the game.
SHOULD have been 30 million and the loss of much more as to the picks...just pathetic.

This was on the Cardinals organization, not just Chris Correa, who acted as an agent.

    For the umpteenth time:

$2 million is the maximum fine allowed under the MLB Constitution.

And what about a civil suit...or is MLB protected by the anti trust laws?

Not allowed, due to the anti-trust exemption.

    Heh, nice edit there, Plowman.

Okay, but why limit to $2,000,000?

It isn't like the Commissioner is paid by the owners and works for the owners.... he is democratically elected by the players and owners together.

So I am thinking like a $50,000,000 fine and maybe the death penalty for the Cardinals. I cannot stand Tony LaRussa or Albert Pooholes anyways.

For the month of April, all Cardinal players should be made to throw left-handed.

If the MLB did not want to give the Astros any more or better picks, why not take away the Cardinals' 2018 first pick as well? That would keep them from manipulating the draft in their favor for at least the next two years.

    This

Since Manfred couldn't fine them more, they should've given the Stros what he gave them AND taken 1st round picks from the Cards for the next 5 years. That would've made a statement. It didn't happen because the Cards are MLB royalty. Let the A's/D'backs/Rockies etc... do some crap like this and Manfred would've thrown the books at them. I'm willing to say what Correa/Cards org did was on par with Pete Rose and less than the Steroid guys since almost everybody was using them.

The Penalty was not a deterrent
