me: The few people who don't believe this in this country, you think they were swayed by these marches? you: People that don't believe in this country? Who are you referring to? you asked me who are the people who don;t believe in treating women like equals in this country. so i answered Mostly these marches are an incredible waste of time that nobody will remember in a few months. If you are not arguing for/against any laws then I must assume you are content with the laws in this country in regards to how women are treated. These marches have no real goal in mind and the mission statement posted shows that. why wouldn't you just ask her why she marched? Ask her what result would make the march a success? Any legislation she want repealed or enacted?
I did vote for Clinton, and I'm not a one-issue voter. Trump was a horrible choice for president for many reasons even beyond this, in my opinion. I hope he proves me wrong and he's a great success. With regards to women, the issue here isn't just Donald Trump being a lecherous pervert (which he has been, as has Bill Clinton). Nor is it just him trying to shut down accusers from his past (which he has done, and which Clinton is alleged to have done -- not for her own behavior but for the behavior of her husband). It is all that, plus his policies, plus his public comments throughout the campaign and which will likely continue as President that belittle the women opposing him on the basis of their gender.
It need not be just one of those two. If it helps prevent new legislation that hurts women from being enacted, that would also make it a success. Of course, it's hard to measure that, since we can't know what would have happened absent the marches.
tallanover, I think you're being intentionally dense w' my sarcasm and I don't understand why you want to spend your Sunday morning this way. If you want to understand why people do something, listen to them with an open heart, not a doubting, disdainful heart. I of course know why my wife wanted to march and I explained it earlier in this thread, in some detail, and it led me to honor her request that I join her. I also shared, in retrospect, after actually participating, what good I thought it accomplished. I shared how I, as just one citizen and husband, digested it. If those reasons don't make sense to you, that's fine by me. Unfortunate, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Nor am I going to post about it further. A lot of women who are scared feel better today than they did yesterday and know they have a huge community willing to actively defend their beliefs. That's the absolute minimum that was accomplished, and to me, it's non-trivial. Kind of like the Tea Party was non-trivial and made a lot of people feel better, even while I disagreed with their views and motivations. The Tea Party impacted our government in ways we still see today. To say it had no impact is absurd, even while I view that impact as mostly negative. We'll see if a large women's movement can do so. I don't know, and you don't know either. We understand you'd prefer the marches to never have happened. But they happened. Watch what happens now if Congress tries to defund Planned Parenthood.
Oh I mis-read your earlier statement. I read 'the few people who don't believe in this country'. Missed the this. Got it now. Completely disagree. You keep focusing on laws. That can be the end by-product, but you normally don't jump from A to B without going through some steps, especially when you are out of power. The march sends message to the current people in power, which may tame some of their ideas; it encourages liked minded folks to participate, which can lead to votes and other actions for their cause, and it can spread throughout society, changing society takes on some of these issues. You and anyone that think it's a waste of time - you don't have to participate. And you don't have anything to be concern about, if you are against their positions. You don't even need to have an opposition campaign, an effort to discredit, or to even criticize. But I found that people who do react, do think there is something worth reacting to.
Thought about marching with a sign "Nasty Women, Unite Me" ... but when I arrived and pulled the sign out of my trunk, I realized I misspelled it Untie... so I left, but decided to keep the sign, just in case I find a need for it, later.
I am just trying to understand why you are objecting to this so much. Obviously millions of people thought it was important enough to show up and be counted. It may not change anything, but it showed that a lot of people care about these issues. I understand you don't think it's worth doing, but they have every right to do it, and it is making a statement.
It's odd how disappointed so many seem that all of these marches were peaceful, united, and with record setting attendance. I'm not sure why they wanted the protests to be violent. I can't say that I'm sorry the protestors let them down.
Who is disappointed? I think people are disappointed the Leftist had to vandalize and destroy personal property. Clearly the women are more classy.
ANy proposed legislation you are referring to? what is B? you said they are not proposing any legislation. The criticism you see is to these marches bashing trump supporters. that has nothing to do with your suggested cause of these marches. Nobody disapproves of treating women as equals (besides Muslims). objecting to what? I don't have a problem with them protesting just trying to understand the purpose so i keep asking what it is. I asked Bob, who went, and got no response. Your suggestion was that it was to be heard. Thats a means to end , not an end. Durvasa suggests it might be to stop some future legislation that hasn't been proposed yet? i guess, but that seems weird to devote your time to speak out against something nobody is suggesting. Still haven't heard a legitimate answer to whats the end game. Why don;t all these women speak out against how women are treated in Muslim countries? I didn't hear any of that at this women's right rally. When these marches spend time bashing trump supporters and not addressing actual women whose rights are being greatly violated then it stinks of bullshit. Maybe there where speeches against the atrocities going on in Muslim countries and i missed it though.
The goals listed in the PDF were pretty clear and straightforward, you did get a legitimate answer. To prevent harmful legislation from passing, in this thread I've posted several times about such harmful legislation that those in power have warned that they are looking to pass. These women are speaking out against how they are treated in muslim countries, you just skipped over it? It was a global protest. Just because women in muslim countries are treated worse, doesn't mean that women in America have to settle with whats been given to them. This is that old "But what about black on black violence?" deflection tactic.
Gotcha. Further proof that if you protest against trump, it automatically makes you a liberal. If you dont attrack Trump relentlessly, then you're a conservative.
I can do this too! So, if you vandalize and destroy personal property you are a leftist and if you don't then you aren't!
B is what's outlined in the PDF earlier. If you mean violence by bashing... I would criticize any violence, and I have. They play no part in any protest and is self-defeating. The Women's March yesterday was peaceful.
Has he ever been different? Hate to imagine how he is in real life, but sorry to say B-bob....you just wasted a good post.
