No, it's in Los Angeles. The website doesn't have it appear like my area is going to get it, but when I called to ask them about it, they said, it was supposed to be available next month.
I don't know if AT&T Fiber is ever going to reach The Woodlands. I think we were one of the, if not THE, last in the area to get Uverse...which I'm on now at the fastest they have (45). My promotion is up in 2 weeks and I'm seriously considering the move to Xfinitiy. I know the service nightmares are real. But I need better internet service and AT&T isn't going to be able to provide it. I do have one question for anyone who might have had Uverse and switched to Direct. Did your internet speeds improve without the drag the Uverse is on the system?
Yeah, I may have to get DirecTV again to do a bundle. I loved the product of directv, but the prices after going through promotion after promotion finally rose too much. I was always using Time Warner/Spectrum for internet because they were the fastest in our area. We got a bundle with internet and Time Warner cable, that was a good price. But with AT&T fiber, it might be worth it to go back again to Directv and take advantage of bundle deals and other promotions for as long as possible.
Data caps have little to do with speeds. The vast majority of carriers have fiber to their POPs, so bandwidth is not an issue. It has to do with customers dumping their expensive cable packages for better priced OTT providers like Playstation Vue. This is their way of punishing their customers for not buying their cable package. One of the biggest advantages to having fiber in the home is having symmetrical speeds. For the vast majority of people, this is not a factor (currently). In area's with multiple providers, DSL's low cost forced cable providers to drop prices and increase speeds and upgrade the current infrastructure. Cable is so superior to DSL that its starting to force DSL to go the way of dialup. Fiber will eventually do the same thing to cable. In a few years, I suspect we will see cable companies running fiber into the homes. They will already run fiber to businesses if they are willing to pay for enterprise services. Thus why google fiber is all but dead.
I have T/W's (now Spectrum's) high speed fiber optic line to our house and we've had it for a while (at least 2 or 3 years), currently get download speeds of 118/119 Mbps, upload at just under 12 Mbps (and pay extra for their high speed broadband) at my PC. Google Fiber is coming out to install their 1000 Mbps service (with HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz - our T/W package just has HBO & Showtime+NBAtv, etc.) in a couple of weeks (we have an appointment). (what we're getting - cut and paste below from GF) Dual-band Wi-Fi router included Whole-home HD-DVR included: Record up to 8 shows at once and store up to 500 hours of TV 1st TV box & remote included Add up to 5 additional TV Boxes + remote sets for +$10/mo each (we are getting 2 boxes) 1 terabyte of cloud storage included: Store 500,000 photos or 200,000 songs It's $100 a month cheaper than our T/W service, which has been pretty good as far as speed and service are concerned (maybe we've been lucky, or it's the neighborhood. We live in the same neighborhood, more or less (it's a large neighborhood), where DD lives in Southwest Austin). They said the guy will be here about 3 hours doing the installation. I'll be shocked if it takes that long, but we'll see. If Google Fiber is dead or dying, you could have fooled me. We're looking forward to getting it.
Just to add, I think in Austin AT&T is offering unlimited to compete with Spectrum/Google and you don't have to have DirecTV etc. Also anyone in Austin area that doesn't get Google/at&t fiber can get TWC/Spectrum 300 mbit down with TV (all channels nbatv/foxsw fox 1 etc for sports except hbo/showtime etc) and phone for $99. You need to go in the twc store to get it, and if they won't do it, don't bother calling their regular phone (it's beyond a nightmare), just have your wife/gf etc sign up as new online with your zip (and it should lower the price way lower than national and then you cancel). They're trying to directly compete with gigabit. I am on that price locked in for another 6 months (yr to begin with), the guy at the TWC store told me to come in and they'd fix it again, I have a feeling TWC has been losing customers with the fiber rollout. I've actually been getting 400-450 mbit on spectrum lately, but I also run most of my own equipment so I am thinking that might factor in some. If att/Google gets offered soon though I'm out Hopefully your Google install goes great!
I made the move from Uverse to Xfinity and am SO glad I did. Just such a complete better platform, fast as hell internet and customer support has actually been great. They haven't charged me for one service call. I signed up for the on year plan, no contract. Just SOOOOOO much better than that crap Uverse. Especially OnDemand.
` Yes. I'm glad I have DirecTV for this very reason. if you're a wireless AT&T subscriber, they have some good bundles for DirecTV now that are a bit more affordable than in the past.
Google has already stated they are no longer expanding into new markets with hardline fiber but instead going wireless. Wireless is not a good substitute for fiber. But that said, I am happy you are getting Google Fiber. I am jealous
I'm actually with Verizon for wireless. I'm satisfied with that for wireless, so not looking to change. But I will keep an eye on the bundles. It's always a little tempting just because Directv is a definite cut above Time Warner Spectrum as far as television goes. They have more channels in HD/4K, and their DVR/Genie products have better functionality and capabilities. If I can bundle it with AT&T fiber, then I'll be upgrading internet and the television setup.
We've had it for several days now. Definitely faster. Around 400 Mbps download and damn near the same upload speeds (350 Mbps+). If you do a lot of uploading, you'll freak out over how fast it is. Great for games. Great for streaming, which is how I get League Pass now (although LP itself is funky). Now I'm going to have to get a new PC so I can take full advantage. Netflix and Amazon Prime? Much quicker. We saving $100 a month and have twice the premium channels. HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, and I may be forgetting something. Honestly, I'm still figuring out how to take full advantage. My major complaint is that Google Fiber doesn't have NBAtv yet, and I don't know when they will. That one of the things I have to check on - whether I can stream that, like I stream LP. The boxes are very small. About the size of a Roku box. The remotes are excellent. The remotes are white, and when you touch them, the whole remote lights up as long as you're holding it. Very cool! Service guy was nice and thorough. Wish I'd asked him more questions. He was eager to answer any that we had.

My apartment complex was supposed to get Fiber months ago. Work on installing it seems to have stopped and I can't get any information out of the front office or Google. Maybe they should take down the "We have Google Fiber!" sign down from their front window.
I'm signed up for internet only when it finally gets here... they have layed the wire in the neighborhood (what a crazy amount of work that was... understand why its so expensive) but are just finishing and not out to the houses yet. I could be convinced to try the tv package as well... but no NBATV is basically a non-starter!! I love that channel... naturally.
It's pretty amazing how they install the system in the neighborhood. They literally did a massive job all at once. It was a trip, not all of it good. The car I drive the most had 3 flat tires while they were doing it. I've been here over 20 years and never had a flat that obviously came from work in my neighborhood. Look out for small screws just long enough to penetrate a tire and give it a slow leak. Freaky! From the sound of it, you should be getting it installed in your place within a few weeks. That's what happened to us. Anyone know if you can stream NBAtv?
