I haven't read through this thread as much as I should have, but what do y'all think about the ketogenic diet? I'm looking to cut fat, which has me running an hour a day, and lifting three times a week, but I was thinking about starting the ketogenic diet as well. My family has a scary medical history. I'm going to be 30 in August. Doing the keto diet (at least for a little while) will help me feel better about straying from the path that my bloodlines have laid for me. Diabetes, High blood pressure (I've flirted with it since I was about 16...Haven't really found meds that help), heat issues, cancer, you name it, it's in my genes. I don't eat poorly, save for maybe two or three meals in a week. This is something I'm working on, as well. Otherwise, I eat very healthy. Cutting out those last few meals a week has been very hard (especially pizza). Anyone do the keto diet?
Carbs are always a controversial topic when it comes to people trying to figure out an optimum diet. I tried a low carb diet for a couple of weeks and I ended up feeling starved all day, overate and gained 5 pounds or so. That being said, the carbs I eat are mostly complex, I would definitely recommend cutting simple carbs as much as you can. Sorry to hear about your family's health issues, I know its hell seeing love ones suffer from heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The few things I feel confident recommending to anyone who is looking for some recommendations on a healthy diet is, eat a lot of veggies, drink water and cut the processed food out of your diet as much as you possibly can. From what I have seen those are universially agreed upon by most if not all credible health doctors, scientist and advocist for a good diet.
Can't recommend it enough. Back when I was a vegan I had certain preconceived notions about low carb/high fat, that it was unsustainable, made your blood pressure and cholesterol skyrocket, and who could possibly say that fruit is bad for you??? I was so, so wrong. Once you get through the first few days of sugar withdrawal, your head clears, your cravings diminish, and going any length of period throughout the day without food is a breeze. You'll lose weight quickly in the beginning because sugar and carbs make you retain a ton of water. Don't get discouraged when it slows. Since eating a mostly meat diet I have seen my blood work improve, weight maintenance is effortless, and I am so much happier than when I was on the sugarcoaster. I do not eat anything sweet, even artificial sweeteners, and for some reason this keeps me in that *zen mode*. Try it for a month! Couldn't hurt. Even though this article is about the paleo diet the info is really spot on (as are all of his other articles): http://www.gnolls.org/1141/eat-like...paleo-in-six-easy-steps-a-motivational-guide/
i feel you bro. i don't get it. i was doing stronglifts/all pro for a year now, and switched to another regimen which has me doing high volume reps. I do legs everyday, but Mondays, I do squats heavy, and man, I'm still reeling from that. Makes no sense. I've been doing this regimen for 2 weeks and still sore every week.
Make "leg day" 2-3 times a week and make DOMS your b****. You need to up the frequency for actual results. Bro splits are for suckers.
Works been really stressful lately and I have been eating junk food to cope (quit drinking after new years). No fast food, but Snickers and barbacoa tacos cooked in lard oil, things like that. If i was still a smoker I would be up to 2 packs a day. Thank god. I was too dependent on coffee too so I cut that out of my diet. I quit going to the gym in January because of how packed it is after new years. I plan on going back later.
This is the right idea, but BECAREFUL with squats and other exercises you're new at. Make sure you have the right form, because that's how you quickly **** up your knees. I learned that the hard way and it's taking me a while to recover. The rule of thumb is ANY PAIN and STOP doing what you're doing. Go try something else or just skip that group for that day and do a different/new routine.
my wife is doing this right now and swears her brain fog has miraculously been lifted. but she is battling swings of extreme irritability, was this a side effet you experienced? if so, how long before you were able to get over it. personally I feel like any diet that doesn't allow beer or potatos is the devil, so ya'll just enjoy your little satan party.
Check your body mass index. At 210lbs, 6'2 mine is 27 bmi. Im cosidered overweight. I need to be at 194lbs to be in the normal range.
Any diet that neglects food groups is unsustainable in my opinion. If I were you I would just stick to a preventive, pre-diabetic diet. The problem with keto while you are pre-diabetic or diabetic is that poor insulin sensitivity will push your body naturally to ketosis maybe even ketoacidosis. A ketogentic diet will further exacerbate your condition.
This may sound oversimplified, and perhaps attributed to my relatively young age in the 20s, but I feel like almost any diet that establishes a caloric deficit of 300-500 calories, and includes at least two meals with a good chunk of vegetables like brocolis, cauliflowers, mushrooms, carrots, and other greens (try different salad mixes) will not only help to lose weight, but also work towards much better overall health like alleviating pre-diabetic conditions. The conventional answer to your question is to go full vegan, which has proven to dramatically reverse spiked blood pressure, pre diabetic state, etc, but honestly I've tried it, and it's tough to just give up all of our old eating habits cold turkey. That's why I'd recommend eating at least two servings of vegetables with whatever workout plan/caloric intake you establish. I've done this over the past two years doing P90x, Insanity, crossfit, you name it- and it pretty much has you feeling great regardless of your activity/lifestyle.
Yeah this is what I do when I need to lose a few pounds -- track my calories using the myfitnesspal app, have a 500-1000 calorie deficit each day (I naturally burn 2800 calories per day without extra exercise) and then do 3-4 workouts per week - usually p90x or insanity or something similar. I've gotten to where I can predictably lose 2 pounds per week without any problem.
that is a picture someone made by guessing based on crappy selfies. It is worthless, pointless and shouldn't be used for any reference. When finding TDEE and BMR in Houston you have easy access to BodPod and DEXA.
I dropped 45 pounds last year and have kept it off this year by eating a high protein diet (no cheese or bacon though) with lots of green vegetables and beans/lentils being the only carbs I eat. Then one day a week, I eat (and drink...) whatever I want and that keeps me from plateauing or feeling deprived. Only side effect is the day after my 'cheat' day, I feel like crap. But I've started drinking grapefruit juice throughout the day on my cheat day and that seems to keep my blood sugar from spiking while I'm indulging. That keeps me from feeling too bad the next day. Also red wine instead of beer.
I am on day 11 of keto and I would recommend it if you have the willpower. I started with a buddy and he is already quitting because of his love of sweets. I am already down 7 pounds and dropping! Had some fatigue last weekend but I am feeling normal now. My biggest issue with the diet is that I miss stuff like hamburgers and sandwiches and cheating can knock you out of ketosis. I never really ate a lot of sweets or junk food so while it was a big adjustment (mainly cutting out rice and bread) on food choice it wasn't terrible. My goal is to drop 15-20 pounds to get the beer gut 100% gone and I am almost halfway there. Plus the sugar vs. fat conspiracy is pretty interesting to learn about. I guess I wasn't surprised that we had been duped but I figured the reports would be more widely spread.
