Hey guys so my sister just got an Internship in Sugar Land but she lives in the Memorial Area. She's a Junior in College and Internships have been really hard to come by so she's pretty excited but I personally think its a bit to far too make that commute daily. You guys think its worth it for Internship or too far? Keep in mind she'll be making about $12/hr

At $12 an hour she wouldn't do any worse than break even after gas and vehicle maintenance, and it is an internship after all. So if it'll help lead to her ultimate goal, then why not?

The answer depends entirely on the value of the internship to her future. If the internship is meaningless than it might be too far. If this is an internship that she'll get great experience from, will look good on her resume, is a door opener to the field she wants to be in, etc. than heck no not too far.

When you are at the bottom of the ladder you have to make sacrifices to start climbing the direction you want to go. It's too common these days for people to think they should be at the top, or at least above the middle as soon as they get started.

So she would have a shorter commute than 95% of the jabornis on here? This post was made to brag?

That's not a bad commute at all. When I was in college I commuted from San Marcos to Austin for a non-paid internship.

If the internship is in the field she wants to go into, she should take it.

    This.

There was an account manager in my company that was covering a territory all to himself right out of college. To me, it was a bit of a reach to send a kid into a territory he hadn't lived in but it seemed like it was going to be a success. He did quite well from the get-go. Turned our...that wasn't enough for him. He is the definition of the millennial who feels like he's owed a 6-figure job right out of college. He quit just recently to go work for a consultant (a job that thrives on being experienced). The sad thing is, had he just grown his territory at the pace he had the last 2 years, he'd be well over 6 figures either this year or next. It's not like it's a difficult life either.

Stupid kid didn't know how good he had it.

If the internship is a few months to a year, I think the experience gained outweighs the length of the commute.
I don't know if I am missing something, but to me memorial city mall is not that far sugar land if you take the beltway.

Pics of sis to see if I want to Uber her?

Anyway, she should definitely take it. People commute much further sometimes for min wage jobs. It's prolly a 25 mile commute which is not too bad and the fact that you say Internships are hard to come by and she is excited makes it a no brainer

Keep the internship. Pay and commute are minor details in the grand scheme of things, and the experience she gains from the internship will more than likely outweigh the minor cost of commuting (which others have mentioned, isn't really a long commute in Houston).

That's only about a 30 minute commute. If that's too long, better look for an internship where she lives lol. That's not bad at all, but yeah if the internship is aligned with her career, definitely worth it. Even if it isn't, an internship is a good experience.

Ditto on the commute being a non issue if it is good experience.

What is that, like 20 miles? Hundreds of thousands of people do that much or more every day. And she'll largely be going against the flow of traffic both as most will be coming into the city in the AM and going out in the PM.

She'd probably spend more time sitting in traffic if she worked downtown tbh.

Memorial to Sugar Land is hardly a commute at all AND if its an internship that she could benefit from in the future then yes you make that commute.

turning down experience that could be valuable because you don't want to commute for a few months is a bad decision.

Yes, it's worth it, no question. Even if it's a garbage internship, it's worth it to have the discipline of understanding that sometimes you have to put up with inconveniences to get an opportunity when you're a real adult. I know people who will commute from Tomball to downtown to earn less, because if they don't they'll have nothing at all. Now if there is a second internship to compete with this one, then maybe you start comparing commutes alongside growth potential, pay, etc. But, if it's this internship or pray something else comes available, a commute imo shouldn't even be a consideration.

At least they are paying her. When I had to do an internship at the medical center it was unpaid and had to pay for parking everyday.

I commute from Memorial to Stafford (near Sugar Land) quite often. It literally takes 25 min even in the **** traffic on I-10. Once you hit the beltway east, I am going 75 the whole way
