Kid almost got a quadruple-double in his rookie debut game beating LeBron's Heat. And then won the Rookie of the Year averaging 16.7 ppg, 6.3 apg, 6.2 rpg, 1.9 spg... Now in his 4th year he's averaging 6.1 ppg, 2.7 apg, 4.6 rpg, 0.7 spg... On 31/20/77 shooting... It seems like he's not much of a defender either. Can you think of another Rookie of the Year that later on had a more disappointing career?
i don't know much about stats, but emeka okafor seemed like a disappointment. maybe because of the bobcats.
Tyreke is still a solid starter, and probably just a tier below all-star level. The only reason you'd call Tyreke a bigger disappointment than MCW, is that Tyreke had the famed rookie stats only matched by Jordan, Lebron and The Big-O. That being said, I didn't realize that MCW's stat's weren't far off. He beat Tyreke in rebs and ast as a rookie. His scoring was just down. Just looking at the ROY list, a few that stand out: Emeka (as previously posted) Mike Miller Maybe Chuck Person? However he became a great role player.
We all knew he sucked at the time, didn't we? Not really a disappointment, just the best (at the time) of a disappointing draft class IMO.
interesting thread. He is worse than Tyreke because MCW has shown almost zero improvement since being drafted and he still is far from starter quality level player. At least Tyreke has better decision making and handles than MCW. After 4 years in the league I'm not even sure what his position should be. A pg? Not with his handles and constant turnovers and bad bball iq and vision. A wing? Then he loses the advantage of his length in d and his lack of shooting hurts even more.
I have a feeling if tyreke is traded for a team with a better system/situation , you'er gonna start hearing his name again. Kinda like the Eric Gordon situation. we have'nt heard much about him in NO, but once was in the right system, he is a great player. BTW i think Tyreke's best position was PG.
Okafor had a long and steady career in an otherwise weak draft class, and despite injuries. Think he averaged double-doubles for a season or two. MCW is just garbage
Lin is playing pretty solid basketball these days for a winning team... Not even that far behind what he put up in his "Linsanity" year. So nah. EDIT: D'oh, ignore the "winning team" part... Was thinking he was still in Charlotte.
Mike Miller had a lot of really good seasons. He was an exceptional shooter too. Nothing remotely close to MCW, imo.
That's a bit unfair. He had a wrist injury early in the season and has only played 11 games so far. The first couple of games back he was knocking off rust. There isn't enough data to get an indication of how he's doing this year. That said, he hadn't really progressed a lot from the rookie season to last season. His shooting last year was a respectable 45%, though shooting 27% from 3 and 65% from the stripe is pretty bad for a guard. He probably will never be a great shooter or great defender but I wouldn't write him off yet. The other thing I'd be concerned about him though is his proneness to injury -- missed 12 games in Year 1, 16 games in Year 2, 28 games in year 3, and 27 games so far this season.
I think his rookie year stats were pretty widely regarded as empty. Philly went all-in on getting him the ROY at the expense of everything else.
Last 29 ROY Winners: 1989–90 David Robinson 1990–91 Derrick Coleman 1991–92 Larry Johnson 1992–93 Shaquille O'Neal 1993–94 Chris Webber 1994–95[c] Grant Hill 1994–95[c] Jason Kidd 1995–96 Damon Stoudamire 1996–97 Allen Iverson 1997–98 Tim Duncan 1998–99 Vince Carter 1999–00[c] Elton Brand 1999–00[c] Steve Francis 2000–01 Mike Miller 2001–02 Pau Gasol 2002–03 Amar'e Stoudemire 2003–04 LeBron James 2004–05 Emeka Okafor 2005–06 Chris Paul 2006–07 Brandon Roy 2007–08 Kevin Durant 2008–09 Derrick Rose 2009–10 Tyreke Evans 2010–11 Blake Griffin 2011–12 Kyrie Irving 2012–13 Damian Lillard 2013–14 Michael Carter-Williams 2014–15 Andrew Wiggins 2015–16 Karl-Anthony Towns Looks like it is MCW so far with Evans behind him.
Imagine if Embid played last year. This season would have one of the worst crop of rookies to choose from. Who would win, Malcolm Brogdon?
Disappointing is a good way to put it. Most of the top 10 are pretty meh players. The funny thing is that all the stars of this draft came AFTER MCW and are international players. Steven Adams, Giannis, Gobert, Schroder, Dieng, Nogueira, are all probably going to have better careers than anyone in that top 10. This is why nowadays, never underestimate a mid-round pick.
