Here's my question to anyone who supports this: why is this necessary when currently no federal funds go toward abortion at Planned Parenthood? PP provides a variety of health services to women that have nothing to do with abortion yet Republicans are still on this crusade to destroy anything PP related at the government level, both state and federal.

Breaking news: The only place were women can get access to health care is Planned Parenthood, there's literally nowhere else they can get birth control, pregnancy tests, breast cancer screening and other womens health care services.

What do you have against planned parenthood and why should it be defunded?

Access has forever been changed to mean the government pays for it.

My access to Mount Everest is non existent. . I would be forced to use my hard earned savings if I wanted to go there.

I have nothing against it, but I understand why some do. Personally I'm VERY pro-abortion, so if shutting down Planned Parenthood leads to more people that would normally have had an abortion polluting future generations with their genes then I'm absolutely against it. However, if I was against abortion and didn't realize the good that it does this country and the world at large, then I could see not wanting to give an organization that specializes in it public funding.

Money is fungible. If federal money goes to Planned Parenthood and planned parenthood performs abortions, then federal money is being used to support abortions. Pretending that it doesn't because of Planned Parenthood's accounting practices is imbecilic. If someone in the US was sending money to ISIS, but it was earmarked only for feeding the poor in ISIS held territory, they would still be rightly charged with providing money to a terrorist organization. Federal dollars that go to Planned Parenthood and are spent on janitorial services, electric bills, rent, etc. both support abortion through the provision of those resources to be used in abortions, as well as freeing up money that would otherwise need to have been spent on those items to instead be spent on abortions.

I don't know why people always try to deflect criticisms of Planned Parenthood by talking about other services they provide. They can still provide all of those other services, not provide abortion, and still receive federal funds. Just spin off the abortion practice (maybe call it Unplanned Pregnancy) to go be a separate entity, then you don't have to worry about the accounting tricks to try to prove the federal money is not paying for abortions. The federal money would go to the health care only Planned Parenthood, and the new, all abortions all the time business would not be at all connected to it.

I do some contracted tech work at Planned Parrenthood by U of H.

I couldn't even tell you where in the building they do abortions, it's such a small fraction of what the do. The building is basically under siege by crazies every hour they are open who will litterally do anything they can get away with to trick women into not entering. Doesn't matter if they're just going in for a pap smear.

I think the people trying to shut them down have spent so much time and effort on PP that shutting them down has become a Captain Ahab/Moby Dick type obsession.

Why no is no longer a valid question. They are fully consumed in the struggle. It is like PP is symbolic of their entire struggle against abortion.

For a lot of lower class women and men, it is the only place for them to get quality health care. Sorry you are so privileged.

    Comparing abortions to ISIS? Really?

The fact remains that the feds cutting funding for Planned Parenthood will not reduce the abortion rate at all, nor will it prevent Planned Parenthood from performing abortions because they are independently funded. Your claim that it's just an accounting practice is totally fabricated as you present no evidence as that is the case.

Bottom line is that poor people will suffer from this with less health care and treatment. This will also be a set back in the fight against HIV. This is being done to appease people like you, who don't know the facts but are brainwashed by your right-wing b.s. media sources

Funny to use the word "specialize" when only about 1-3% of planned parenthood services consist of abortion, would you not say so?

They don't 'specialize' in abortions though. It's much more than just that, that's just the boogeyman that is used for it.

This is a really great point and also highlights that PP is not just about abortions. When Pence defunded it it was the first stepping stone to having an HIV outbreak, worst in his state history. Because well...sex is free and available to poor people, if they don't know they have an STD then they will go on to transmit that STD.

They don't care about HIV until someone they care about gets it. In their eyes they see it as god's punishment to the sinners. Pence probably feels proud of what he did - I kid you not. The GOP doesn't even address AIDS in their party platform. They see HIV as a problem of urban poor areas (code: black people) and gays. They opposed needle exchange programs vehemently.

Now that the epidemic has died down in urban areas and is spiking in rural areas amongst jobless whites - guess what - all of a sudden the very same people who opposed the programs are now backing them. If that doesn't speak to their inherent racism, I am not sure what else does.

This is stupid **** by the GOP. I mean, these dudes are usually the ones who complain about getting people off welfare and how we spend too much money on the prison industry, yet they don't want to give people access to things that might help prevent some of this stuff.

You can't tell another person what to do with their body, you can't legislate this because people will simply do what they want even if the system doesn't provide for it. The whole pro-life movement needs to die off and quickly, because it's holding the GOP back by many decades and it will never work. Anyone who is pro-life needs to go adopt a child or shut the hell up.

Money is fungible, it's all the same pot.

The easy solution is to allocate the same money to women's health organizations that don't murder unborn children. Everyone's a winner.
