I think what op is asking is not about any type of star player, but rather a player like say, Tyson Chandler. History has showed us morey would avoid his contract length being just a bench player for us at his price and years.

I would love Tyson to non guarantee his last 2 years but I don't think he does that, especially after it burned Lawson.

But will morey look at this type of move or avoid it at the sake of flexibility?

I think having signed Anderson and Gordon somewhat forced his hand.

Imo I think he should go all in. This year is special.

The site changed its format. Last season they broke it down as PnR (roll man) and PnR (ball handler).
Now they have it all thrown in together somewhat. I wanted to see Nerlens Noel as roll man (PnR); but
I'm sure he would be off the charts with Houston. I knew Stauskas was driving well this year. He
almost equals EGo.....so EGo at 6'4" and Stauskas at 6'6" doing much the same with Rockets players
around him would be trouble for the rest of the league. Add Payton III for defensive needs if
Bev misses time......Rockets would be complete. Good productivity at below average cost
without handcuffing the Rockets long term is Morey MO. Each player fits the system. Other
deals like Millsap and Ibaka will gut the team. Not enough assets to do lesser type deals for
Korver/Tyson Chandler/Chandler Wilson/Aaron Gordon etc, deals to fill all needs. My deal
is less glitz and glamour; but more substance.

Edited later: Hate to lose Dekker; but sometimes you have to sacrifice a rook & pawns to capture
an opponents Queen.......leads to an easier path to the King (LeBron).

I don't think you trade core pieces to acquire another star. They've won 75 percent of those games because of those guys, not in spite of them. And if you deal guys like Gordon, Ariza, Anderson or Capela now, I think it has the potential to backfire in a major way.

The best course of action would be to make minor roster moves to bolster the team's depth at the deadline and look to make a splash in free agency this summer.

I think we can go ahead and discount the possibility of any move or series of moves making us competitive with a healthy Golden State. "All in" imo is making the Rockets a solid WCF team that simply hopes one of the Warriors big 3 goes down for a couple weeks.

I love Chandler on this roster, hypothetically, this season. But the guy is 34, and he's not worth paying at that salary for another two years. Also, I don't think Morey needs to have the mentality of "This year is special; let's go all in!" He just added a new coach, signed two new key players for multiple seasons and got a contract extension from his star player. The mentality needs to be "We've got a core capable of competing for years; let's maximize our chances at a championship." Adding Chandler's cap-crippling contract doesn't do that. And if the Rockets really are one star player away from winning a title, then Chandler likely prevents them from being able to acquire that piece in the offseason.

Trade ennis and brewer and 2nd rd pick to mavs for bogut and sign charmers id go to war with that

We have our second star in Eric Gordon and maybe our 3rd is on the roster already

I was just citing Tyson as an example but none the less his cap implications aren't as people lead you to be. His current per year salary is the going rate for a quality center and he is still one of the better ones at 34. It's 2 more years after this but I'm sure he could be moved just as easily to create salary space if needed for a player.

You could also use Dudley as an example. Players on contracts that are further then this year and next. Acquiring actual role players for the sake of adding role players.

In the past morey has not looked to do this but instead taken flyers on guys, or acquired expiring talent also looking at flexibility.

Well seeing as they paid oladipo and their own 1st rd pick ... it would have to be around that value if not more

So maybe capela/kj and two 1st do the trick but I doubt it

The key issues I see on this team are:

    - Spacing with the bench unit. It's not bad, but it's well below the starting unit + Gordon. Our standard bench (i.e. When Harden, Ariza and Anderson sit) is Gordon, Bev, Dekker, Brewer and Harrell/Nene. Two plus shooters and 3 below average shooters. We need another shooter in that group.

    - Rebounding and paint defense without Capela. Not sure where to find the stats, but it feels like we go through spells where the other team is getting second chance points every other time down the court.

    - A competent guard when Bev or Gordon miss time. Someone that knows the system and is ready to contribute after sitting for long stretches.

The rest of the guys aren't gonna get us anything good in return.

Gotta trade something to get something....or else have capspace and hope someone signs with you (how's that working out for Cuban?)

If we can't find anything then we have to attract other stars who would like to play for Harden and D'Antoni next offseason. If we keep playing like this we should be an attractive destination.

Although in that scenario we would need to dump some role players to create the room.

IMO for the Rockets to have a chance to win a title they need an athletic center with preferably more experience than Capela. Ex Tyson Chandler. A player to take Corey Brewers minutes. Ex PJ Tucker. A more reliable backup PG Ex. Jarret Jack for scoring, Pablo Prigioni for system execution. None of the players mentioned are great, but they help us in areas of need and are more realistic.outside of Jarrett Jack who should be really cheap. While, I would love the likes of a Demarcus Cousins, with his attitude would much rather go for a Jahlil Okafor and call it a day.

Might as well be in the hypothetical trade thread as that's basically what this thread is. How about a,b,c for d, etc.

DM will use 100% of the information available to him to decide if the upside of a potential trade merits the risks.

Rumors/feels he has on potential free agent signings.
Amount and length of contracts involved.
    Quality of players being added
    Disruption in existing team chemistry
    Etc

My feel is DM does not make the type of overpay trade OP suggests. For one, that's not his mo. He doesn't like doing that anyway. For two, given the assets we'd want to trade vs what we'd get back we're not talking about moves that would really be obviously beneficial. For three, why rock the boat? Especially with the "chemistry" lesson last year and this year taught us.

I suspect trades at the fringes - as he does every year, like moving Brewer and a pick for a young player on a teams bench and cap space.... or a big trade in the 0.0001% chance he Rockets can get lucky and a team is willing to move a star for peanuts. Otherwise hold out for FA.

I'm not saying his contract is a poor one, necessarily. In this market, Chandler is a pretty decent value. What I'm saying is that his contract would cripple Morey's ability to add another potential star player. If he seriously wants to make a run at the Gordon Haywards and Blake Griffins of the league in the offseason, then trading for Chandler today essentially makes that impossible. They'd likely be at or over the cap, and there's not a team in the league that's going to be willing to take on enough salary to make signing a star-caliber player possible.

Also, for $13 million, what does Chandler do significantly better than Capela? They're both good offensive players in the pick and roll with little to no range outside of five feet. They both rebound well and can block shots. And Chandler is probably a little better defender than Capela, but not remotely the same guy he was in his prime. So for a small fraction of what they'd be paying Chandler, they already have a player who's probably 80 percent as good and is more than 10 years younger. So why add Chandler?

I do think the Rockets could use another quality rebounding big man, but there's got to be guys out there they could feasibly acquire that won't completely break the bank and kill their flexibility. And if there isn't any, than I still don't think Chandler's worth it. Because if you add Chandler, you're essentially saying "This is it. This is the group we think can win a championship." If I'm Morey, I'm not ready to say that yet.

Nice choices, but they present a few problems.

The Korver trade would need to add more salary to pass I think, like maybe adding BB or Wiltjer for salary purposes.

Same with Barbosa, not enough salary going out, so would have to add Brewer and maybe get back Tucker also for salary.

I don't think Morey goes for Chandler although he is a good fit because of his contract length/age.

I definitely think we don't or shouldn't trade ANY of our rotation players from this year...unless it's for a BONAFIDE Allstar, and then I might be even hesitant to do it. Harden's approval would definitely have to be with it, along with MDA, so that all are on board and hopefully chemistry remains.

I agree with most here that we need:
    1) Another backup PG/G that can fill in for 10-15 mpg when needed, run a PnR, and shoot 37% or better 3 pointers
    2) Another rebounder/rim protector that can PnR and hit above 50% FT, with some good help defense
    3) Move Brewer along so that his nude photo collection no longer forces whomever is our coach to play him, so another wing
    4) Preferably get players whose contracts expire this year, unless they are an ALL-Star, so that we have some flexibility this summer
    5) Go ahead and move some 1st and 2nd picks to upgrade now because we may not have roster spots for them next year.

I could make a list of those types of players for each position, but who knows who is available for trades right now, although some are free agents. I trust that Morey will make the best deal that we can find that fits this team at the deadline.

Here's the thing guys, don't forget that no one will give us a good player on a good contract in exchange for our poo poo platter ("PPP") and the 26th pick in the draft.

The person we get for that package is either going to be flawed or have a bad contract. There is no Ibaka for that price, no

There is no chance we touch the core imo. None whatsoever. Capela, Harrell, Anderson, Dekker, Ariza, Gordon, Beverley, Harden. Those guys are not going anywhere. We're not trading Nene away because he signed cheap and fast, it would take a deal so good that Nene himself would understand. Business is business but these sensitivities do come into play in the NBA. You could make the case that we would include Harrell or Dekker if we get an established productive PF who is not too old and can be retained fairly easily.

That leaves Onuaku, Wiltjer, Brewer, KJ, Ennis, Brown, mediocre 2nd round pick (do we have another one from POR?) and our ~26th pick in the 2017 draft. Our unprotected 2018 pick is probably more valuable, but Morey doesn't do stupid ish like that.

So Ibaka >> that's a somewhat unrealistic dream. Again, we're not getting a good player on a good contract for the PPP. We are not going to break up the core of a team that has won 21 of its last 25 games for Ibaka. There is a small possibility that he lets his team know he is leaving in the summer and he will only agree to an extension with the Rockets. In that case, the Magic will have to quietly take the best version of our PPP and act like it's the trade they chose. However, I would question Ibaka's characted if that happened. They brought him in as a core piece, made him a leader, revived his career, dealt great assets for him. The chances of that happening low, and pretty much everyone on the board would be in for a forced Ibaka trade where all we give up is the PPP and a pick. So no need to discuss further.

Now, more likely options. Someone like Tyson Chandler if they take Brewer back and he agrees that we can waive him for $3m in his final season - that could be a good deal, and it might be a deal he's willing to go with. This is an example of good player, not so good contract, which is what you can get for PPP. He is NEEEEEEEVER going to make 2 full years non-guaranteed lol that's the most ridiculous thing I see all the time, he is not even managed by BJ Armstrong why would he do that. Downside of Chandler? Basically we lose $5m of cap space this coming summer (since Brewer's $7.5m has to go the other way), HOWEVER we don't have enough cap space to sign anyone outright anyway. His contract will be difficult to move but again I don't see why we'd move him. Capela and Chandler for 2 years at a combined $15m/year, you would do it any day of the week. You use him this season and next as super sub, mentoring Capela especially defensively. When Capela is up for the extension, you waive Chandler's final season at $3m. I'm willing to convert Brewer's contract into the more expensive Chandler because that's a guy who will be in the top 8 rotation for 2 years, and a solid part of it. Championship experience, defensive mindset, has worked well with MDA in the past. If we plan to operate above the cap, this is a decent option and you can't deny we would be so much better prepared to face off with contenders with this guy off the bench at the 5. He's kind of like Bogut, but not as good a passer and not a racist c*nt.

Millsap is a possibility but he would cost Harrell and Dekker in addition to the PPP, maybe even have to throw in another pick given Toronto and Boston will offer excellent trades to ATL. Not sure I'd do that.

Koufos, Gay, Dragic, Monroe, Joakim Noah can be had for PPP and a 2nd rounder or 2017 first.

For PPP and no picks, we can basically get..

This is why I keep saying it will be hard to find a better risk/return proposition than:

    1) Waive Bobby Brown
    2) Sign Chalmers or Jarrett Jack
    3) Trade Brewer for literally any C

No risk, solidifies the team in its current form, cap flexibility unaffected, picks and youngsters intact.

I keep making this point. Matching salaries is one thing, but Brewer and McDaniels are basically worthless as trade assets. Brewer is a negative because he is owed money next year and isn't a good player. McDaniels is neutral at best if a team thinks they can maybe get some positive production out of him. So even if you think 2 2nd round picks is a good deal for Player X, keep in mind that attaching Brewer to those picks REDUCES the offer we are making, it doesn't enhance it.

Kyle Korver, etc. some team out there will give them an expiring scrub with a 2nd AT LEAST to get decent players, so our offer that includes Brewer is a worse deal.

Disagree with the "this year is special" idea. This is what the Rockets look like with a real offense. I was watching a Timberwolves game and the announcer was saying how lucky D'Antoni was to get "the good James Harden" - that Mchale had been fired because Harden came in out of shape and selfish. It shows that so many people don't realize what's happening here. This is not special - this is who James Harden would've been 3 years ago if we'd had a real offense with real plays and real 3 point shooters.

I think we need to start looking at this as a 3-4 year window and, if we do, we'll see Dekker and Harrell become somewhat important. You also see that stars on bad teams are going to come up for free agency during that time and we'll be a destination for sign and trades, free agency, etc. As stars and quality vets start forcing their way here we'll start pushing GSW for dominance and Lebron will begin his decline.
