Yea and he was Dallas's 4th choice at QB; also Chip Kelly was going to draft Dak but got turned down because of Baalke. He would have sucked in San Fran
This was known at the time. They wanted Jimmy G. OBrien loved Jimmy G, talked about his mind and his feet. The Patriots punked us on that. The mistake was that they mis-evaluated XSF so badly. They weren't the only ones, but it cost us. I am in the camp that DOES hold that against them. If you are in love with a QB you don't wait for your pick in the third round.
He was, what, 2 picks away from being available to them in the 3rd round? That's where perhaps a war-time GM can read the tea leaves and make those sorts of predictions... or perhaps they could have offered up an extra later pick to move in front of the Pats. We've seen them do that before for players they thought would be gone prior to them picking. Just totally dropped the ball.
It really is inexcusable. You DESPERATELY needed a quarterback and there was one you loved there at the top of the 2nd that was projected to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick (was actually talked about as a potential first rounder in the process.) It's crushing that they passed on him, a decision that still haunts them.
If all that is indeed true -- Knowing that you need a QB, having the first pick of the 3rd, and at the end of the 2nd your QB is still on the board... And you don't move up? That is absolutely inexcusable. And I'm not even sure that Jimmy is a stud.
LOL at the idea that Rick Smith is the one who picked, scouted and went after Watt, Cushing, DeAndre, Foster and others. Come on.
I like Shanny and I like Vance Joseph. I really like Jimmy G. I hate that it's going to cost an arm and a leg to trade for him and that makes me thing we won't be in the hunt for him because of the resources it will take to get him.
This is why I think Rick ain't going nowhere, he's really not that bad. Think on this for a second, we have the #! defense without arguably the leagues most dominant player. Because of the undrafted guys street free agents Rick was able to find Rac just New Englanded J.J. Watt. Too bad there's no clear cut qb in this draft or I wouldn't be surprised to see J.J traded for a haul of top round picks
If he really is the guy, they absolutely have to get him. Trade a 1st and consider him the team's first round pick. A 1st and 3rd seems like a no brainer to me, IF Jimmy actually is as advertised. The Texans need a QB in the worst way.
Its the system of scouts and player personnel that made these picks but Rick slotted them on the board, he deserves credit
Yep, gotta agree that Rick is becoming the scapegoat here. Everything good that happened is credited to someone else. Everything bad that has happened is all Rick Smith. How does that make sense?
Its not for Vance, he hasn't impressed me with a pirate booty of defensive talent. For Kyle its going to be an all out bidding war against Denver again smh
You'd think it was as easy as just writing names down but it takes analysis, I'm not a Rick Smith fanboy by any stretch but he's not that bad Brock Assweiler not withstanding. One other thing I'll hand to Rick, he makes his money after the draft, our udfa are some of the best in the league
