This reflects poorly on McNair- he could put a stop to Smith & O'Brien's unprofessional leaks to the press, but he has not. The cover-your-ass culture will never win big.
Kyle Shanahan would probably be a popular pick. It would certainly pep the offense up. Like I said though, the Texans job would be up there with the Broncos job as the best available. Pretty much any candidate would jump at the opportunity.
He tried. There were leaks about that one safety bust they signed blaming Rick. Also remember the leaks saying Clowney was lazy? McNair said no more leaks! OBrien is out the door so he doesn't care. He's trying to save his career.
Again though, that's why I don't really believe it. No matter where BOB would go, it would be an inferior situation. If he goes to a crappy situation and fails then it's back to college for him.
This all feels like slinging crap on the wall to see what sticks but who knows. I don't doubt that there is tension between Rick and OB -- Rick is very close to the McNair's and undoubtedly has more power than he should. I can see OB being the kind of guy who would get sick of not having his way very quickly, and/or he may have just decided that being a HC in the NFL isn't for him. He seemed to thoroughly enjoy coaching at Penn St. He also doesn't seem like the kind of guy to bail early, but maybe there have been no extension talks so he is prepared to jump and this is his way of putting the pressure on.
From a different Texans forum; don't know how reliable: http://www.texanstalk.com/threads/next-head-coach.111364/page-20
If it's true and BOB is leaking this stuff I want him fired. It's just incredibly unprofessional to put this stuff out there right before a playoff game.....especially when he's been a whiny b**** about how everything has to be "team first".
I'm going to be so pissed off when they let OBrien go and keep Rick Smith. I'm not really advocating for Orbien to keep HIS job, but how the heck can Rick Smith justifiably keep his job still? So disappointing. Also going to be EXTREMELY disappointed to lose RAC.
Smith is a sycophant whose role is basically being a "house negro" to the McNair's. BOB doesn't like him, the players don't like him, the media and fans hate him, yet he survives. Like Grima Wormtongue from LOTR, a conniver, a flatterer, a liar, and a manipulator.
That's the main issue... If you get rid of BOB, you essentially get rid of any potential Patriots ties he had (including Vrabel and RAC.... who would have plenty of options to go elsewhere within the Belichick tree). On the flip-side, a new GM/consultant who has a better working relationship with the coaching staff in place... who could also either suggest to bring in an OC with more ties to Osweiler and/or just get rid of Osweiler together... would be far less disruptive. If the Texans actively look to get rid of BOB... there will be zero quality coaches lining up for this job with the current ownership/GM structure. You'll basically be relegated to projects/long-shots that are largely 1-2 years/done.
Why the **** is Bob McNair so convinced that Rick Smith is a good GM?? What evidence is there to suggest that he is? I simply do not understand his infatuation of Smith, nor do I understand why he would be against pushing him up the hierarchy into an executive role on the business side. It's gotten to a point where I can't even stand to listen to McNair's voice anymore. He just really rubs me the wrong way.
I already see it happening. We'll come out flat, the defense will try their hardest to keep us in the game, but the offense will sputter and fail. Then after the game, O'Brien will resign, the speculation will begin on who was responsible for the Osweiler signing, and we'll have another off-season of doubt and denial from Rick Smith and Bob McNair. It's pathetic, and predictable.
You forgot the hiring of a consultant... and their recommendations that don't ever seem to make much sense or get followed.
Assuming that we can hold onto RAC and/or Vrabel, I'd be all for losing BOB, especially if he is leaking nonsense to the media before a playoff game to try and make himself look better. Replace him with Shanahan and maybe we can get something out of the offense where BOB failed.
