Sounds good but, why not just learn how to shoot free throws like everyone else. It looks awful for a NBA Level player. This was just a bad pick by morey.
Because everyone else is dumb. Dwight and De Andre Jordan have been learning to shoot fts like everyone else for years and it hasn't done anything for them, I can beat the two of them on ft shooting any day of the week which is sad considering they are among the best bball players in the world. Bad pick? Chinanu is a 2nd round pick, 2nd round pick who is only 20 years old has already shown to be a 3rd string player, the average for a 2nd rounder is being a bust and getting cut once their rookie deal expires.
Onuaku hits the FT's, crowd/team goes nuts! http://sendvid.com/lp7xvt9a Don't know how to embed this link, but enjoy.
He's still rough around the edges, but I liked what I saw. Hope he can get some decent minutes against Dallas.
A free throw shot is like shooting practice. Underhanded free throws seem to take away that natural inclination of shooting practice.
A FT is nothing like any other shot you are ever gonna take in the course of a game, uncontested, grounded, and slow. You practice FTs to get better at that only and making them in the game is the only goal.
Some guys just can't make them the right way. If they have another way they can make them, it would be stupid for them not to use it. And any hack-a victim should try this if they haven't. Maybe it solves their biggest problems as players. Maybe they can play in the final minutes because they're not a hack-a liability. I think it's balls out charming he has the guts to look a little silly to better his game. And it gives him a signature that makes a fourth-string center a colorful character and one that's fun to root for. Plus he has an awesome name. It's an especially awesome name to say. Chinanu Onuaku. What name is more fun to say than that? I like this guy. I hope he has the stuff to make it in the NBA. He made me enjoy trash time. He made the fourth quarter as entertaining as the first three. I like him.
Also, they're hardly under-practiced at shooting. They practice shooting, in practice and in games, for a living. They probably shoot hundreds of shots per day. it's not like those 2-10 FT's per game are going to make a difference.
Chinanu looked decent last night. I thought he was going to be a train wreck, fouling left and right and getting pushed around, but instead he looked decent out there. I hope we can give him some minutes against Dallas.
Chinanu shows some real character that he wants to play. His FT was going to keep him off the court (much like it will catch up with Capela in time), and he solved that. He can make shots in the clutch, and his underhanded shooting (while now viral) has been at work for some time. There was even a game in Greece (or Turkey) that he played with an American national team that he hit game winners this way. Outside of the novelties, he really reminds me of young Patrick Patterson on defense. Super strong for his age, not really sure how to channel his aggression and instincts. . . . Better than average shot blocking and rebounding. . . Needs experience, time, and conditioning.
Love that he has the courage to shoot and MAKE his FTs without worrying about idiots who think it matters how he shoots them. Making them is the key, nothing else matters. DD
This argument that people shouldn't shoot underhanded free throws because it looks bad is pretty weak. Consider how often Harden flails his arms like he's been shot when he get's fouled. It looks awful yet without it he probably wouldn't get as nearly as many free throws as he does. If it improves the free throw shooting of guys who play in the post and we win more then they should do it. Wins and losses matter and whether someone hits 90% or 50% from the stripe no one is going to put you on a poster for free throw shooting. They might though if your team wins more.
It's sad that this is considered courageous instead of being a smart player dedicated to improving himself.
