They better do it quick, James Earl Jones isn't getting any younger. Any movie without him as the voice will be comically bad.

One complaint: They drove the "hope" theme a little too hard. It had lost some power by the time "that scene" happens.

Huge props to every single poster in this thread using the SPOILER tag. I am not going to be able to see this movie for another week, but love checking this thread of "general opinions" on the movie. cool.

If they can make 500 spiderman movies, there's no reason they can't remake the prequels. The old Republic would be badass as well.

    Best $4b ever spent

Oh man, Old Republic stuff would be great. I hope Disney goes nuts with Star Wars. It's a great franchise and the expanded universe shows how much potential is out there. Launching a new 9 part sage based on the old Republic could net them $3 billion over a decade easily.

I also think that Rogue One shows (along with other films like Deadpool and potentially the upcoming Wolverine film) that an audience has aged to maturity that is ripe for mature films. I really believe the entertainment industry should realize that there is a generation that grew up on dark themes in comics and books and would wholly embrace serious, gritty takes on stuff we loved as kids. The generation of campy movie lovers has aged out. A Bobba Fett move for example should at least consider going the R route.

Yes, they did hammer home the "hope.....hope.....where have I heard that before? aha! Episode IV, A New Hope, I GET IT" a bit much.

Reminded me of "Return of the King" (speaking of fighting against a dark empire, btw). Good Lord, quit using the word "hope". We get it. Here, it was an explicit connection thing.

No way a Star Wars movie goes full R, nor should they.

Rogue One proved that you can make a very adult Star Wars movie without having to use excessive profanity or over the top violence. The Bourne movies have all been PG-13 as well to name another adult franchise. My concern after Deadpool is that franchises will try to include R rated stuff just to be "edgy"

Deadpool needed the R rating because it's at the core of the character (a non profane deadpool isn't deadpool), but in general I'm not a fan of R ratings if they can reasonably be avoided. I don't need blood splatters to know a guy has been shot. Some movies need it, Star Wars doesn't.

If they make a movie about jabbas space hookers, can Disney make it R?

I saw it a second time:

I really enjoyed the tie ins to both Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars. There is a brief glimpse of Chopper (the droid from Rebels), General Syndulla is paged at Yavin 4, and the Ghost blasts into the battle at Scarif, and Saw Gerrera is directly from The Clone Wars.

Vader was awesome, and I liked the Bacta tank scene too...showing he has to basically be constantly healed to live even with his suit. I'm assuming this can explain how he's such a badass mofo in Rogue One and by the time he's facing off with Obi Wan (just a few days later at the most), he's a weezy old man. Maybe he needed a Bacta recharge?

So it blew all expectations out of the water, even the revised ones. 155 million dollar opening weekend, could be on track for a 1.3 billion worldwide box office.

They also learned their lesson and looks like Felicity Jones was the only one who made any real money from the movie. Possibly the only cast member who made over a million.

The quality of a movie is purely subjective. It seems clear that its not that good of a movie for you but it was fantastic for me. I was absolutely entertained in a major way. I will see it again.

Well I completely disagree that the "quality of a movie is purely subjective" but you are allowed to like what you want. I said that earlier in the thread to a guy defending the prequels. I was just asking people who said it was better than half a dozen other star wars movies how that is possible when they themselves said the characters weren't established or memorable. If you don't want to explain or don't have that view I don't understand why your replied to my post.

No it is most definitely subjective. The fact that you and I disagree on what a quality movie is proves that it is subjective. This isn't math, its strictly about what you like or dislike. To me, the movie was very very very hight quality. Nothing you say can change my opinion. And there is that word... opinion. If its based on opinion its subjective.

Not trying to change your opinion, how do you know we disagree? You are looking for an argument where there isn't one. You framed it as if you didn't want an argument where I wasn't even replying to you. To be clear, you (and most people) love this movie. I think that's great.

The only thing we disagree on is the quality of a movie is subjective. I've seen movies that were out of focus and some that were missing entire sequences that explain crucial pieces of the plot (not this movie). That's objectively a bad movie.

This is pretty much how I feel about Rogue One. Except for his rant on CG humans.

Sorry, not trying to argue. I thought you didn't like the movie or at the very least that it was weak. I apologize if I was mistaken. Not that it matters, we like what we like and it doesn't somehow make me right and you wrong if we did disagree on the movie.

I knew it. You guys hyped it far too much. Not to take away from the movie though, it was good. Just not as good as i was hoping.

Lots of holes if you consider things in this movie that somehow disappear in a new hope.

After seeing it a second time and initially enjoying it a lot, I'm afraid I agree. Pretty weak first hour or so, and the lack of characters really hurts the movie. The last act still holds up, though, as one of the best in the franchise.
