Agree. That's what I'm saying. But that doesn't mean BJ and Morey planned all this. imo, intervention was due to other teams complaining, not wanting Morey to get that awesome deal. They would be fixing an unplanned result, so no one later plans to use it, which still is unlikely (imso) as I stated before. And note, @The Cat does not agree Intervention was what happened...listen to his podcast. So, we are just talking here, and I'm answering your questions for fun. I can't talk about this if we are getting serious, thinking Morey and BJ planned using Nets as a sucker team...or whatever. Talk to 'holic about that idea.
I am actually not talking about the DMo case. Just musing about this case becoming a precedent for later abuse. A loophole is by definition something in the wording of the rule that leaves an opening for someone to beat the spirit of the system.
Two things here. First off, not ALL deals that The Vertical gets are from the league office. Many times, Woj/Marks also work directly with the agencies and get copies from there, or bullet-point summaries of the key terms. It's possible that it was submitted to the league office, sure, but not 100%. I've heard of cases where the GMs/agents tell reporters that things are done when they agree on the big-picture terms, but there's still some I-dotting and T-crossing to go. Secondly, the reason I emphasize them not announcing it is because they typically wait until after the completed physical to do so. Again, nothing I can prove, but my hunch is that the Rockets found something that really surprised them during the physical process... and I doubt it's the existing back situation, given the 180-degree turn. Also, to be clear, my comments on "misguided" folks on social media were simply directed to those turning this into a chemistry thing -- basically, saying that the Rockets decided they don't need DMo because they're winning, or because they were worried about locker-room issues from an unhappy player, etc. Essentially, Facebook comment section people. Doesn't really apply to informed folks on here, least of all you. Just emphasizing that for DM, it always is/was a big-picture decision. And yes, I was hoping someone would catch the "dirty game" shoutout.
yep, and the CBA has a clause to prevent use of any loopholes. I call it the "No Loophole Clause." The league/Silver at anytime can come in and say, "no, no, no....clever, but no." And also note, you are not allowed whatsoever to have any under the table agreements for signing future contracts. The penalty can be very severe. And that's what you are suggesting might happen. You are saying that a team and player will look at this DMo situation and say, "let's try this. Let's get a sucker team to set market, then we will rip that up and sign another based upon that to get you slightly more money." You can get in big trouble getting caught doing that. So, Silver might not even change the wording of the CBA for RFA issues (as I suggested) to close a loophole, because there is already a loophole killer in the CBA. I always think in terms of this statement by Coon in the CBA faq: As any league executive will tell you, the CBA isn't a list of the things teams can't do; it's a list of the things teams can do. The league operates in a "disallow by default" mode -- actions are not allowed except where the CBA specifically permits them.
No BJ messed up the Nets contract, instead of making it structured in a way that's hard to match (Asik and Lin), he did the opposite. The Nets weren't penalized, that just happens when you make an offer that doesn't get matched.
I see what you are saying. IMO it gives the Commie too much power to pick and choose what he wants to nip in the bud and what he wants to let pass with no need for any due process. We hated Stern partly because he was treading the line of overusing his power.
BTW, good to have some rational discussion here -- if you don't mind filtering out the hysterical noises from both sides -- and the occasional sprinkles of insider views.
Why do I think DMo is talking to the NBAPA? Because he's upset at the events surrounding his career since he first went down and is doing everything he can to salvage his career and earnings. He talked to them after Detroit rescinded the trade too. Why do you think BJ originally crafted such a team friendly deal with the Nets?
I'm telling my kids to wait for the Donatas Motiejunas Memoir to come out. It's going to beat Harry Potter. And they can brag that their old man was right there in the thick of things.
Currently, the "ending" for this movie...ain't worth even watching a teaser trailer, though. UFA just means limbo still for our protagonist.
Can we move this to the NBA forum. Tired of all this discussion over a guy who would have been third string on this team.
Sooooo.... WTF happened with Motiejunas?? Still don't know the reasons why Houston passed on him. Didn't pass the physical but Rcokets are trying to protect his image and next contract? .... Or what?
