The only logical explanation to all of this is that the Rockets noticed something with his back that was alarming and did not want to sign him but did not want to fail him on his physical and destroy his career.

They sent him home, got the league involved, and worked out something where DMO and BJ could be happy. Morey said he wanted a "resolution" - so sounds like the Rockets were not really concerned about him being a Houston Rocket. Why? They went through all the hoops. It all changed after the physical - the physical DMO wanted to avoid - and now we know why.

Rockets must have saw what Detroit saw - that his back was in a terrible place.

Well they pushed things to the point where they lost the big man depth that DMo would have provided that the team will potentially need later this season, that's how they messed up. Sure, DMo is out of the contract that the Rockets offered, but he'll get another one, meanwhile the Rockets have no way of getting that big man depth and injury insurance they would have had so they'll spend the rest of the season hoping that guys who ALWAYS get hurt somehow stay healthy.

I mean, we knew about "basketball reasons" the day of, and both the Rockets and Lakers screamed bloody murder after. That's the other reason why I doubt that angle... if it's C, the Rockets got absolutely screwed over, and there's no reason for Daryl to just sit there quietly and take it. It's exhausting and we'll probably never know, but I'm skeptical. Not impossible, though.

This screams the NBA taking a hardline stance against the new deal which circumvented the spirit of RFA in the CBA - it will be interesting to read the new one and see if it accounted for this.

The league should give us a 2nd rounder as a compensation pick for the screw up. Like the 44th pick so we can get our next Chuck Hayes.

What exactly do you mean by they “pushed” things?

Rockets did everything by the books as far as I’m concerned. The only person that was acting unprofessional was D-Mo and his agent, and to an extent I am happy that the chemistry and young player development of this team is not disrupted by a player who has a tendency to complain.

Could the Rockets use D-Mo? Sure. However, the front court is not where the Rockets will struggle in if there are injuries. Ryan Anderson has been just okay so far and the Rockets are winning despite that. Where the Rockets need the most depth in at the moment is at the guard position, because the Rockets do not have an adequate backup if Beverley or Gordon gets hurt.

Daryl sits there quietly and takes it because the League orders him to. If the league did this, they are applying their "no loop holes" clause in the CBA and I can totally see them putting gag orders on everyone for the details, because it could blow up further. Plus, maybe there are things the Union said to keep under wraps. When there is no reason to release details, then why release details. I totally see how offices need to work that way, sometimes

Anyone think DMO isn't really failing these physicals?

    1) Pistons got scared by the media's support of the Rockets. It doesn't take a week to decide.

    2) Rockets already knew what DMO's health was. A regression doesn't seem likely as injuries usually strengthen after a year.

Except the Rockets played him in 42 games (including playoffs) after Detroit returned him. And he passed the Nets physical.

I'm not saying his back is in perfect shape, but I don't think this clusterf*ck over the last couple of weeks was due to his health. I think it was due to a lot of contract-wrangling by BJ and Morey.

    1. Who gives a flying **** about the Nets? I certainly don't and no Rockets fan should either.
    2. No one said they did anything wrong. It was BJ who screwed up again and again and again.
    3. How the hell was any of this our fault? We did everything by the book.

Wasn't it one per year for four years. I think those weren't necessarily MRI's, but whatever you do to get an accurate body fat %. I thought it was some way to quantitatively measure his conditioning.

Technically, sure, but the reason Morey chose not to include ANY of the incentives from the Nets offer sheet was so that he could bend him over a barrel to get those opt in dates changed to make it even more ridiculously team friendly than it already was. Doing so pushed things too far and got the league involved. For all we know, the Players Association took exception to it and that's why all of a sudden we started hearing about the CBA talks falling apart. Miraculously we get a resolution to both at almost exactly the same time....

Bottom line, Morey played hardball to the point where the team lost out.

Personally I am not celebrating as I wanted D-Mo to return and I was fine all along with us giving him up to right under 10M which would have been more than what he received. That said, this has dragged on more than long enough and I am happy that it finally ended.
