That is my current theory that they changed the language to close the loop hole that Morey took advantage of, we will see what happens with the final contract. DD
Precedent. If, and one assumes yes, precedent is to be set then time is inconsequential to the League.
Sucks for DMo as well as the Rockets though - given the two parties seem to have already come to an agreement and DMo was ready to suit up. The league is effectively costing DMo paychecks with each game that passes as well as time the Rockets could be using to figure out how he fits into our rotation.
I think I read he gets full value for the contract as long as he signs by January 1st... or did I misinterpret?
It is all about value. The contract that Motiejunas signed with the Nets was/is extremely team friendly. There is very little risk for the Rockets, so of course the Rockets would bring him back. The fact that not a single team signed him until December, and that Morey was comfortable not having Motiejunas in training camp or playing the first 1/3 of the season tells us everything we have need to know.
You'd think one of the interested parties (Rockets, BJ/DMo, NBA) was waiting to see if the new CBA would alter anything in this contract. Did Morey find a loophole and someone didn't like it? Etcetera.
Can anybody cite a similar situation that has happened to other teams in the past? Why does this have to happen to us?!
All this drama for a role player that hardly moves that needle? Don't care anymore. I am just enjoying this ride that the Rockets are taking us on. I suggest the rest of you join me on this ride.
Just because the league and the players' union have agreed on the terms of the new CBA doesn't mean things change immediately. The current CBA doesn't expire until June. Technically, it doesn't expire until June of 2021, but both sides have the option of terminating it early in June of next year, which is apparently what they'll do in order to put the new one into place. Bima -- help! When signed by all parties, does the new CBA take effect immediately over the current one? Or when the current one expires?
Of course things just don't change immediately. But there might be language in the new CBA to which BJ Armstrong or Daryl Morey or Adam Silver might allude to for this circumstance. Or not. Anyway, this whole thing is tired.
They can allude to the new CBA all they want, but until it goes into effect, that's moot. Gotta play by the current rules. And as of today, the league and the NBPA have until January 13 to ratify the new CBA. So it won't be going into effect until then at the very soonest. I'd also be surprised if anything in the DMo saga affected the new CBA at all. They've been hammering away at that document for the last year or more, and they announced just yesterday that is was a done deal. Hard to imagine either side demanding last-minute changes because of some "loophole" perceived by some of the members of ClutchFans.
