No way you were going to keep one if you promoted the other. That was never in play. Sucks to lose Todd Orlando. Not sure they can poach another highly respected defensive coach to take his place.
Handled very poorly...? How? I'm not sure this is true, but I've heard Orlando was made interim HC because specific recruiting limitations apply to the HC, thus allowing Applewhite to continue doing his thang over the indefinite period between.
I was fine with Kiffin. But this promotion baffles me. They should have gone with Orlando if they were going to hire internally. I am hoping this won't turn into another Levine era.
We knew we'd lose whoever didn't get the HC job. Rumor: Major couldn't go back to Texas. He could have. We do know that for a fact. Rumor: Couldn't make a deal on buyout with Lane or Les - not true. No one was offered the job or discussed buyout until we decided Major was the guy. We made it clear going in don't talk to us if you won't have a big buyout. Major - strong TX ties, competitiveness, notoriety, right guy at the right time for UH. (Did you call guys like Mack Brown...) We didn't have to call them, they called us. The people that called me during the process to hype their guy...
I thought about it, but budgeted the 4 day trip at around 1.7k with gambling, pet sitting and all. I just couldn't justify it in my own mind. Been there a few too many times already. But I will be watching. I've never been to the campus before, but it looks like it's about 8 miles from the strip, so seems like you would need to take a cab or rent for the back and forth.
But then again could be free trip potentially haha. Yeah if I was already out of town I may have just gone out there for a day or two. Not often they're in that city even though it's not a big bowl game
For those thinking about going to Vegas, just know that this is literally the cheapest time of year to go there. Rooms will be priced aggressively if you shop around. Sam Boyd is off the strip a little east of town, and rooms out that way will be cheaper still. (No, not the official game rooms, but good enough for a cheap trip!) My point being, this might be a cheaper trip than some of you might expect.
It's pretty much impossible for UH to schedule a P5 team at this point. Especially one in-state. Might as well just be like, hey, we tried.
Texas was trying to negotiate the $2.5M, looks like that was their "counter offer", no deal so $2.5M it is.
Why would UT waste a non-conference home and home on UH when they've been scheduling them with schools like USC, ND or OSU? I guess there's nothing wrong with shooting your shot.
