There's supposedly 2 reasons Orlando was named interim.

    1) Recruiting purposes to free up Major

    2) For the bowl game Major is always in the press box so it wouldn't fly to have the HC not on the field

If you believe the chairman guy, then they weren't planning on retaining either Major or Orlando when they made the interim HC decision anyway. I'd think they'd have picked him simply because he has more experience.

That is what they are claiming but not sure I entirely believe it. I do know Orlando didn't interview well.

I don't know why you would need to interview a guy who has worked for you for two years. I appreciate the formality of the situation, and I guess you ask how he will handle the new position, but you really should have a pretty clear picture by now. I can't imagine what he says in an hour or two interview will tangibly change that.

Being an OC or DC is very different than being a HC. Watching how a person handles the pressure of being an interim head coach, multi tasking, handling the media, etc all figure in.

Major got the job because UH didn't want to overpay. The best candidates for UH ever is gone, I don't think we will ever see a list like that. Coogs If Kiffin or Miles gone to UH, more publicity for the school and more recognition. There are going to be a lot of major themes from major disappointment to major upset. UH majoring in football win.

"...because, to me, it's all about brands," Fertitta said. "Nobody understands that better than me."

Ahhhhhahahahahahaha. Marketing over quality, the Tilman Fertitta Way. I'll give you this, Coogs, he's slightly more likeable than Trump.

C'mon. Kiffin and Miles certainly bring name recognition, but was it guaranteed they'd bring success? Kiffin's tenure as head coach is mixed, has a history of bolting programs or getting fired, and doesn't have connections in the state. Miles brings a championship pedigree but is in the twilight of his career and his offense grew stale. So after the excitement of landing a big name starts to wear off, questions of whether these guys would fit here do start to arise. Major isn't a big-name hire, but I think he could be just what the program needs right now. Least I hope so.

Complete quote from Fertitta from http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...ane-kiffin-never-close-becoming-cougars-coach :

"I'll be 100 percent honest with you. When this started, I thought that we needed to go out and get a name-brand coach, because, to me, it's all about brands," Fertitta said. "Nobody understands that better than me. And I wanted the University of Houston to stay relevant, OK? I think Les Miles is a fine coach and he's going to be a great coach for somebody, and I think the same thing of Lane Kiffin. I was very impressed. But when I looked at the whole picture and totality, I truly think in my heart -- and so did everybody else on the committee think -- that Major Applewhite was the right fit."

I was mocking more his general restaurant philosophy than anything UH-related.

He's out there killing a white tiger in downtown but the media is asking him about a small time program football hire. SHAME on the media.

Major is a Longhorn, he is going to be the backup for Tom H. The reason UH didn't hire Kiffin is because of money and he probaly gets more publicity than Tillman, or Khator. Right now, would you play for TH, or Major if your in the state of Texas? Kiffin is not just a name, he got a taste of the NFL and worked on championship QBs. Nationally, you can recruit outside of Texas with those facts, you can't with Major. Do you remember what Saban did the Dolphins? His track record is not stellar, but the law of average should be in his favor. D'Antoni is the same thing, less than impressive record, but his experience is the reason the Rockets are where they are now. I got D'Antoni wrong :(. I feel UH if they want play big ball, they need to hire big man. If Kiffin leaves, you know the UH has done well and it is because the players in the state. Regardless, I'm going to UH games. Go Coogs!!

Even in the worst case scenario (he becomes Levine 2.0), there will still be some close and entertaining games against our AAC foes. UCF in 2014 comes in mind. We care so much about the outcome, but it's the overall experience there that leaves the most prominent memories.

Can't wait to get season tickets! Go Coogs!

I hope this post is not a proper reflection on the average UH freshman class.

no its not. the average person is making not hiring kiffin a bigger deal than what it really is without really knowing what truly goes on. I'm glad they didn't hire him and went for some stability.

Kiffin has shown he's not a good head coach. That is why he is available all the time.

Not good with some of the most prestigious brands there are - USC, Tennessee, Raiders. Small potatoes UH? Who knows.

He was fired from all three and had character issues throughout. So I'm not sure what your point is.

Some coaches succeed with lesser programs but cant win at the highest level. No clue if Kiffin is one of those guys. I just know he would have had UH recruiting out of its league.
