Sources tell Houston Chronicle @UHCougarFB coach @CoachApplewhite to get 5-yr deal w/ salary comparable to Tom Herman's first deal ($1.35M)

Sources tell Houston Chronicle buyout in new @UHCougarFB coach Major Applewhite's contract is whatever left at time on remaining contract

So this means that after 2 years his buyout is 4 million bucks? And that is supposed to stop anybody...? Really?

Worse chose that was in the running max 8 win team for the next 3 to 5 yrs. They really should have picked someone else the short list sucked.
This could be a sign that UH was not willing to throw down 2 to 2.8 mill they other guys said hell no to 1.4 to 1.8 mill a yr.

I imagine that the buyout provision is more for if/when he gets a raise.

If he follows Herman's success and ends up at $3m/yr by the 2nd yr, the buyout is now 3 x 3 = $9m

For comparison purposes, Kingsbury has a similar deal at Tech and will have an enormous $9m buyout after this season.

Yeah... that is because UH thought they had their head coach and the higher ups were not happy with what they found out about said candidate. So they punted and hired Applewhite at a low cost.

Wait... Applewhite's salary is really only going to be 1.3M per year?

Not the right time to go cheap. They would have been better off expanding their "national" search. I'm just extremely disappointed in how this all went down and feel like they settled big time at exactly the wrong time for them to do it. They needed a home run, but what they did instead was gift wrap a defensive coordinator to Texas and possibly an offensive coordinator to LSU while hanging on to the most "meh" candidate of the bunch.

I'm a UT guy, not a UH guy, but this is how I feel from the outside.

I said the past few days, that UH should not play hardass with high buyouts on the bigger fish candidates. I think it's better if they hired a national splash like Kiffin or Riley or Miles, even if they leave in 2 or 3 years.

I don't know what Fertitta was thinking with the buyout proclamations.

Man, what an ugly/scary picture. He looks like he just destroyed Houston and killed Superman. Merry Christmas I guess.

He's a ginger with a head shaped like an upside down pear. You're not going to find a flattering photo of him.

I am happy with this promotion. His offense has been our strength. Maybe UH will outscore everyone, Rockets-style.

Looks pretty cool to me. Can someone photoshop laser beams out of his eyes? Actually, his whole name sounds like a comic book character. He's the Coach Houston doesn't deserve and not the one it needs right now.

I'm fine with the hire I guess but I don't understand why UH didn't just embrace the coaching carousel route? You always run the risk of being poached but at the same time you're consistently competitive with an opportunity at a prime bowl game or a long shot playoff birth.

This hire is good. HTown is a hot bed of recruits and Applewhite has connections to keep the talent flowing. But we need a great DC. I really like what Orlando did as far as game planning vs elite college players (Cook in the Peach Bowl, Mayfield and the RB duo from OU, Lamar Jackson) I doubt he stays. The next DC needs to be HEAVY on experience.

With Kiffin it's not just a carousel, it's a circus.

At least with Tom we had the illusion of loyalty and focus on our program.

With Lane, dude will be negotiating another deal before the ink is dry on ours.
