This doesn't look like efficiency to me: it looks like a crock of ****.

You want to tell me that the United States governments employ nearly twice as many people as the private industry does in manufacturing, and that it is all due to supposed efficiency gains? Get out of here. When one side of the argument brings data and the other side brings slogans, who are you going to believe?

Rojo - why doesn't that look like efficiency gains? The private sector needs less people to do the same job - that by definition is efficiency.

its pretty amazing how much more productive we can become due to technology...for example i have a small fab shop in my house, i just bought a plasma cutter that can cut through 3/8" thick steel without the need for an air compressor (new technology, it has the air compressor built in, portable)...how cool is that?? and this is just in my garage...fab shops these days are super productive with the correct technologies....doesn't surprise me

i forgot about computer software as well...nowadays i can design multiple structures using a computer program in a single day, same thing with CAD...this would have taken weeks just a few years ago...our productivity is increasing...

I am quoting your post because it is a perfect example of a red herring.

IBM is a great company to follow over a long period of time to see how companies are able to do much more with a lot less.
