Applewhite is probably the only one of the two who agreed to the large buyout. Less risky than Orlando because he has Texas connections.
For recruiting purposes is what I read. Head Coaches are limited in the amount of visits they can take compared to other coaches and Major is considered the superior recruiter.
Personally I like it. Be a face the current players know and if he does well don't think he will immediately run off to the next opportunity
Let's give the guy a chance. UH wanted a true commitment, not a fling. This may work out well. Kiffin would have blown up in their face.
It is quite possible this works out. However there is a lot more uncertainty with Applewhite. I haven't found out but I strongly suspect Renu couldn't swallow Lane Kiffin being associated with the program. That basically left Applewhite and Orlando. Why Applewhite? Perhaps Orlando wouldn't agree to a 5 year deal. Perhaps Applewhite interviewed very well. Either way, the program weeks ago felt that Orlando > Applewhite and now Applewhite is the HC. I can't believe Orlando sticks around, which means picking through scraps for a DC. Applewhite is about as inspiring as dry paint, so I question his ability to recruit well but we will find out.
Definitely not a splashy hire but let's see how he does. He knows the area so hopefully he can get more solid recruits in here. Oh and get Kyle Allen to stay.
Major did pretty well at UT when he was allowed to make the calls especially since he had noodle arm McCoy as the quarterback. Texas averaged 29 points per game with Case and Applewhite.
I disagree, I think he was one of the main reasons our offense was so great the past two years. Defensively Orlando was decent but while our offense was pretty solid game in and game out, our defense at times was very suspect, especially against navy and SMU
Major is a Texas football legend who's playing history coincides with a big percentage of Texas High School coaches. Sucess at UH is all about recruiting, identifyting and locking up the underated 3 stars. You can't possibly have a large enough scouting crew to do that; you have to have the imput from the coaches: 1. to help identify players for you and 2. to steer them toward UH. (but I am worried about the perception of the school without the hope of joining the Big12. What are you supposed to "win"?) If Herman tought us anything, left us anything it's FAMILY
Chip Brown reporting that Major was willing to write into his contract that he'd stay 4 years at a minimum. TIFWIW.
Because I don't want that prick anywhere near the UT program. Best of luck at UH, and I truly mean that.
Maybe Applewhite will work out, maybe not, but not sure how there's anymore uncertainty with him than the others, except for Miles. Orlando has never been a head coach; Riley has never been a head coach. Kiffen has been a head coach, but hasn't exactly done an inspiring job, and has basically run a clown show at every stop that he's been at. Miles had the highest floor of all the candidates. Sustained success at LSU (although LSU fans always complained about him) and Oklahoma State. I'm assuming that UH didn't want to hire a guy at the tail end of his career, as Les is 63. I can't see Les picking a fight over the terms of a buyout, as UH would likely be his last stop, success or not.
