Who, in the Astros organization, advanced that narrative? For example, if reporter A speculates the Astros are going to sign EE for 5 years $115 million, you expect Luhnow to deny it? I'd say it is the hopeful fans that allow themselves to be decieved with tweets by speculative "reporters" rather than the Astros themselves.
I don't have time to cull all the interviews with Luhnow/Hinch/Crane/Ryan prior to this week, but before Monday anytime they were asked about big time moves they did nothing to quell the expectation and in most cases added fuel.
They were looking to add. They've added. They're still looking to add. Again, you seem to have been more influenced by all the other speculation/tweets. The Astros, Luhnow especially, rarely reveal any sort of insight as to their true plans. They don't deny it either... but they certainly did not hype or fuel stuff as much as speculative social media did.
It ain't over yet, homie. Mind boggling how anyone can be upset with what the Astros have done this offseason. We've added 2 switch hitters and 2 lefty outfielders. Those four players have greatly increased the balance in our lineup while mitigating some of the "swing and miss" we collectively have. We are an absurdly dangerous lineup now. Be happy about that! Additionally, we've sacrificed none of our major prospects at this point and have raised our payroll by only about $15 million... AND IT'S DECEMBER! Jeez, how quickly people forget the 100-loss seasons!
"We're desperate to trade this player and will gladly take less than what PlayerX was worth." Tweet you will see never.
what are the odds that martes comes up and, in a year or so, is just as good as Quintana? Seems like he's on track to debut in June if everything goes right.
Prospects much more highly regarded than Martes have crashed and burned at the major league level. Sure, there's a chance Martes comes up and kills it, but you cannot pass on trying to acquire a guy like Quintana because Martes may be ready to contribute at some point in the near future.
Literally the only thing that made sense to say publicly, aside from "we actually value him higher than Sale given his age/contract". So, whatever.. we'll see what they actually start considering
