You failed to note the big chip we got, or the quality arm....this offseason did not go all in. They went soft.
I follow to see them win the world series. Why do you follow? Let's go all in. What has saving money done for us. The time we did spend we got Nolan Ryan. The time we did make a trade a major asset we got Bagwell. The team is playing small ball. We need to think bigger.
So, you considered Larry Andersen a major asset, yet you consider Reddick, McCann and Beltran "role players"?
The lineup they put out last year was enough to carry an average pitching staff to 84 wins. They've only improved on it. Who was this available big fish that we've missed out on?
Are you a relative of AJ Reed? Not once have I even seen his name on people's "possible starting lineups" against either hand pitching. Yet you keep reiterating how much this season rides on him... Honestly I want them to get a Dexter Fowler/McCutch to play CF so Beltran can stick to DH and Gattis is a back up C. Or Pick up EE/Napoli or some other 1B for one year even so that Gurriel can play LF and, you guessed it, Beltran stick to DH... Either way, I am not worried about Reed carrying my team. That being said, I hope we grab a pitcher, I think we are looking into Archer and Gray.
Role players can be major assets. What is your point. We took that asset and flipped it for a HOF. See the difference.
I think you agree with me. If everything you project there happens we'll be in much better shape. But doesn't appear to be the case. McCutchen and Gray could be difference makers. That would be a team to root for that has a legitimate shot. I don't want the world series appearance to ride on Reed. But that's what the Astros have done effectively by doing little more than what they did. He's the only potential 40 HR hitter we have to fill the need. Yet, he can't do it, and we all know it. So it is what it is.
According to Jon Heyman the Astros are among 2 teams he has heard in on Quintana. Is that a big enough chip for you to ease up off the cliff you are teetering on?
When they do something bold, I'm in. But so far they've backed out of everything like a cat backing out of a paper bag it got it's head stuck in.
They didn't trade for Sale. That is literally the only thing you can definitively say they've backed out of this offseason.
Quintana would do the trick for me. If the staff gets #1 stuff then the lineup will be sufficient to make us a threat and probably get him to 17-19 wins. He adds the balance I would be looking for.
That's all I'm saying. I do agree with you that we are not up there with the top contenders if the offseason ended today. Call me an optimist, but I genuinely think a trade for a Quintana/Archer type is coming.
