So we can still go after: Jose Quintana Chris Archer Jake Odorizzi Justin Verlander Who else could be gotten in a trade?
wow... I'm glad we didn't give that much for Sale (Bregman) We need another solid starter though like everyone else is saying.
It's a wild time in the MLB right now trading top prospects. This makes the #1 overall prospect (Moncada) and two #1 overall draft picks (Appel and Swanson) being traded in the last two years. Very unusual.
Boston didn't really have to give up as much for Sale as was rumored for months. Moncada is a very nice prospect, but the comparison to Bregman isn't valid because Moncada struggled after being called up last year. He is still young and very well thought of, but he is a bigger risk than Bregman. Kopech is another high upside, high risk player. Really, the Red Sox made out well, they didn't have to move any pieces that heavily figured into 2017; and I would argue that they did well keeping Benintendi, Bradley and some of their young pitchers. The White Sox haul is about what I expected. Hahn better not screw this up.... he still had a number of very valuable players to move and could go a long way towards rebuilding if he handles these moves well. They claim Quintana isn't available, but I don't believe that at all. Robertson, Abreu, Cabrera, Frazier, Eaton, and Jones all should be available at the right price.
ToR SP: Quintana Archer Gray Verlander Other SP that might be worth getting: Odorizzi Smyly Kennedy Zimmerman Duffy Ventura Ross Anderson Santana Nova
Bruce Levine is reporting that the White Sox will put Quintana on the market to deal. Expect the same teams involved in the Sale sweepstakes to be involved. White Sox are likely to ask for what the runner ups offered up for Sale. Astros upped their offer today, but were adamant that Bregman isn't going anywhere. The Nationals didn't up their offer today. Feeling is that the White Sox will move almost all players.
is Quintana he even on the market? Kids not even 24 yrs old, under club control for 3 more years on a friendlier deal and is dominant already. To me he has an even bigger tag.
Glad the Astros didn't cave with regards to Bregman. You don't trade 5+ WAR players under club control for 6 years.
"The market for starters is not what the White Sox or Rays expected. Both teams expected to get a mammoth return and it never materialized. The White Sox had to move Sale because that was the first domino. The real question is what type of return will Quintana fetch. Can they get what was offered for Sale by the Nationals and Astros? Does the lack of velocity matter to teams?" - Levine
What did Bregman do after a 1 for 34 start? What did Moncada after a 4 for 20 start? There is more uncertainty with Moncada, although I suppose you could argue that Moncada has more potential.
If you believe what is being said by the beat writers in Chicago, then yes, Quintana will be available.
Boston didn't have to trade that either. They also kept all their young established MLB guys. The Astros didn't have to match for Sale, but they do need pitching if they hope to contend. The Red Sox also will somehow replenish the farm and still be in a position to make more trades if needed.
This. The Red Sox did not give up a single player that they were going to rely on heavily in 2017. The Red Sox will find a way to restock the minors, they always do. There is a risk, but this was a good trade for the Red Sox. People can say what they want about Dombrowski but he is not afraid to pull the trigger and he has a very good record of getting the better end of the deal when trading prospects for stars.
