I'm saying we know they will fill all 40 roster spots by opening day, and there are only 13 players on the 40 man who have options remaining and aren't 'guaranteed' a roster spot, which means that unless they acquire 2 more players who profile to be optioned, they will have to option players who currently profile as being guaranteed spots on the 25 man roster, i.e. Musgrove and Devenski.

Which of these guys are out of options? I haven't bothered to look it up, but I'd guess Chapman, Peacock, Stassi.

    Chapman
    Gustave
    Guduan
    Hoyt
    Paulino
    Peacock
    Rodgers
    Stassi
    Moran
    Reed
    White
    Aplin
    Teo
    Kemp
    Tucker

Also, they won't necessarily have a full 40-man on OD, teams do that all the time.

The rotation needs to be addressed, but not much available (FA/trades).

I am not sold on Giles as the closer. Adding Melancon would be a huge addition to the pen.

    Thoughts?

I'm thinking they'll add another lefty to the pen, given nobody knows which Sipp we'll see this year.

I think Tyson Ross is a must-add. He's the best SP on the market. We have the flexibility to give Ross what he wants. Maybe he wants a short-term deal to up his market worth. Do it. Maybe he wants a long term deal. Give him 4 years. Yes, he has injury risks, but given the current SP market, I'd rather see them gamble on a signing then crater the farm, especially with where our current payroll status.

Take with a grain of salt as Jim said they're done with their big moves.

That's a sick lineup. Best in the Majors!

He's a FA next offseason, btw. Not sure why they'd trade him now and not closer to the deadline.

Life hack: I've found that if you think about the Astros, you can momentarily forget about the Texans

Devenski will be on the 25 man major league roster for the 2017 season unless he is traded. They will not option him to the minor leagues regardless of their roster situation.

Buck Turgidson and Zacatecas like this.

Because you get more value in offseason trades, why wouldn't a team want him for a full season?

Royals also save more, they'll need all they can to retain Cain, Hosmer, Moustakas & Duffy

The new CBA has no more of a negative impact on any team than the Royals. They would have had 4-5 1st Rd picks with all those qualifying offers with it being scrapped they should seek top prospects.

Eh, then I remember I'm a Houston sports fan.... probably the worst sports city with 3 major teams.

Sometimes but not always, especially if you can get 2 or 4 teams bidding near the deadline.

It means Nick Cafardo is looking at the Stros and thinking what they could now do without him having any real information to back it up.

It appears he is trying to say that since Devenski and Musgrove have minor league options left that the Astros would be inclined to send them to the minors in order to keep lesser players on the 25 man roster that don't have options left.

I'd love to see how the city responds to an Astros WS win. I was in Chicago the week they won it all, went to Wrigley Field, there were thousands of people walking the streets around the stadium writing on the walls in chalk, it was an exciting experience. The city sure does love that team.

Side note: I had no idea the stadium was smack-dab in the middle of a neighborhood, it would be like taking MMP and setting it in the middle of Fairfield. It made for an unreal experience, it wasn't surrounded by sprawling parking lots, businesses, etc, just houses. On our way to the stadium in an Uber I didn't know we were there because we were just driving through a neighborhood and out of nowhere the stadium was there.
