Nets sign Donatas Motiejunas to 4-year, $37M offer sheet

The Brooklyn Nets have signed restricted free-agent forward Donatas Motiejunas to a four-year offer sheet worth $37 million, according to league sources.

The Houston Rockets have three days to match the offer ‎or else Motiejunas can join the Nets.

‎The Nets have been discussing the move internally for some time and, according to a report Thursday from ESPN.com's Marc Stein, are "comfortable" with where the Lithuanian big man is medically after back issues scuttled the Rockets' trade of ‎Motiejunas to Detroit in February.

"I'm happy," Motiejunas told ESPN on Friday. "It's a way too long, I waited so long, I just wanted to play basketball."

The first two years of Motiejunas' deal are guaranteed which meant a lot to the power forward.

"Even better, it showed they believed in me," Motiejunas said. "They put me through a number of tests (on his back) and they saw that I'm as healthy as anybody else. After Detroit everybody was questioning me. They showed a commitment that I'm going to be a piece of their future, if not, I'll be happy with Houston, too."

Thanks for starting a new thread. It's buried in that 25+ page thread.

If Clutch wants to merge my poll into this thread, that would make a lot of sense.

Does Morey let him walk or match.

First two years are guarenteed. That could be a deal breaker for Morey

In a vacuum, yes. How much it changes DM's cap management plans, none of us really know. What I do know though, is any time we needed space, Morey found ways to create it.

It's a sweetheart of a deal ...with the potential of being off the charts.

Ok, so why did this guy turn down the initial offers man?! I mean, this offer is only slightly better than what the Rockets offered am I correct here?

Yet, he chose to sit out the first part of the season for this???

    What the hell?

    Or ****?

He didn't want to be traded. At least he is breaking even here.

Anyone know if the final two years are team or player options? I assume it's a player option as the poison-pill Morey frowns on like with Dragic. It's a no-brainer in either case, match that deal.

    WTF? This is strange.

Here's what The Vertical's Bobby Marks, who was a Nets exec for two decades, had to say about the contract:

"The first-year salary for Motiejunas will start at $9.3 million before bonus considerations and decrease in the next three years. The second year of the contract doesn’t become guaranteed until the team exercises a trigger during the first season of the contract, league sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, and each July prior to the 2018 and 2019 seasons, there’s a trigger date to make a decision on Motiejunas’ deal."

Marks makes it sound like only the first year is guaranteed, with the three remaining years all being team options.

    As I said, WTF?

    The rest is here.

Wtf is this basically only one year guaranteed ?

Even if he's done I probably match , who knows he could stay healthy this season and provide decent insurance against our other bugs getting hurt.

As Jalen Rose would say this is broken news. Coach MDA said months ago that in December Dmo would be with the team and know one would care about the hold out anymore.
    Looks like MDA was right.

If the Rockets don't match I would be shocked.

Looks like I won't have to burn my Jersey after all :)

Yeah, I have a feeling that article's wrong. Everything else I've seen said two years guaranteed, even Woj's tweets.

Well, it's absolutely true. Only one year guaranteed.

    This is from Woj himself:

"The contract delivers the ability to void the final two years of the contract, as well as an opportunity to bail on the second season before the end of the 2016-17 season, league sources told The Vertical."
