if we don't land Edwin then I hope he still leaves toronto, preferably the NL though all the rumors suggest AL.
id question your use of the word "travesty". Analyzing why people tweet garbage is not a travesty... also, if the Astros don't land EE or Beltran, it's far from a travesty at all. Lineup will be improved regardless with a full year of Bregman along with Reddick/McCann and less Castro/Rasmus.
So...do we offer EE 4y/100MM and structure it so the last half is more palatable? I'd rather not offer much more (especially at his age) but you gotta bite the bullet eventually to bring in that type of player. 2017: 35MM 2018: 30MM 2019: 17.5MM 2020: 17.5MM Or, we could throw the bank at Beltran for 1 year. Give him $25MM in 2017 and a mutual option for the 2018. I'm still holding out hope that we can trade for Goldy, but that's probably a pipe dream even though ARI's prospect rankings were released and in bad shape.
I doubt we empty our farm for Goldy and then allocate even more payroll to another bat (after trading our top arms, I'd rather see them sign Hill than Beltran), but holy cow could you imagine this? Altuve Bregman Correa Goldy Beltran Springer Reddick Yuli/Gattis McCann/Gattis
$100M only makes sense for EE if he continues to both hit and be able to play a passable 1B. I would feel a lot better if the contract were structured something like: 2017: $20M 2018: $20M 2019: $20M 2020: $25M vesting player option based on PA 2021: $25M vesting player option based on PA That gets him to $110M potential earning and all he has to do is be good enough to be an everyday player.
Haha, I'm quite certain Luhnow has made his best offer, and now the ball is in Encarnacion's court. If they're waiting out some of these other teams to see what kind of offers they can put together, perhaps that one tweet saying that we won't know until after the winter meetings are over wasn't too far off. I will say that as more teams drop out of the race, it's obviously bad for EE since they're trying to get teams to bid against each other. However, I also don't feel good about a bidding war with the Red Sox. We just have to be patient.
