But it is hard for Morey to build a championship team with that one piece, no? It is the follow up trades that would make a good GM great or legendary, he has to outsmart others and himself.
If rings are your only satisfaction then you are destined to be disappointed. Rockets have been good for a long time and that's enough to remain interested in the process. I think you're taking my very simple analogy and running too far with it.
2007- Aaron Brooks (Meh) 2007- Carl Landry (Meh) 2008- Joey Dorsey (Trash) 2009- Chase Budinger (Trash) 2010- Patrick Patterson (Meh) 2011- Marcus Morris (Meh) 2011- Chandler Parsons (Trash) 2012- Jeremy Lamb (Got us Harden) 2012- Terrence Jones (Trash) 2012- Donatas Motiejunas (Meh) 2013- Isaiah Canaan (Trash) 2014- Clint Capela (We don't know yet) 2015- Sam Dekker (We don't know yet) 2015- Montrezl Harrell (We don't know yet) Undrafted Free Agents Von Wafer (Trash) Garret Temple (Meh) Ish Smith (Meh) Jeremy Lin (Meh) Patrick Beverley (Meh) Robert Covington (Shouldn't have cut him) Troy Daniels (Trash) Tarik Black (Shouldn't have cut him)
Jeremy Lamb trash, right buddy, if you wanna downplay all the picks and look like a true moron, you did a great job!
It's not of matter of him having lower expectations, but rather you having completely stupidly unrealistic ones. Without a top 10 draft pick, the chances of drafting foundational pieces (you basically mean stars and superstars) are slim to none. If we kept those role players you keep clamoring about, our entire cap (I know you think this is some mystical voodoo, but the salary cap is very real), you don't have the assets or cap space that we needed to have traded for Harden (foundational piece). Kawhi is also an exception and you and others like you who keep screaming his name keep forgetting that 1) he was drafted by arguably the best coach and front staff in the league and 2) the Kawhi we see today is not the same one that was drafted by the Spurs, unless you think our incompetent coaching staff of McHale and JBB could have done the same bang up coaching job with him. He came in as a great defender with large hands. That was it. On the Rockets, McHale would have kept him on the bench more likely.
Stop warming Morey lap, he's not a super gm. He does not draft well and the evidence that he doesn't draft well is in the roster. How many of the key contributors were drafted? Besides Pat how many of his undrafted guys have worked out? Besides Clint, on the current roster how many of the players drafted by more play more than 9 mpg? What, you're clapping your hands because Von Wafer is back in the d league and Garret Temple shim shammed the Kings? If Morey was any good at drafting he would've taken Marc Gasol over Aaron Brooks, he would've taken DeAndre Jordan over Donte Green(Regardless of the Artest deal), Jonas Jerebko over Chase Budinger, Larry Sanders, Avery Bradley or Eric Bledsoe over Patrick Patterson, Kawhi Leonard over Marcus Morris, Khris Middleton over Royce White, and Jordan Clarkson over Nick Johnson. I'm not exactly sure how or what you are grading his draft prowess on but if its based upon whether or not he selected the best player available or whether or not the players he selected to the current rosters are key contributors to the Rockets or whether the players drafted that didn't last on the roster are contributing to their respective teams around the league then he's failed miserably. He drafts guys not foundational players, that's why most of his players don't last in the league very long. Some of you ppl on here are way too easily satisfied. In your honest opinion what makes Morey such a great drafter?
That was only part of it and a very small part of it, otherwise we would have drafted someone who didn't want to come over or renounced his rights. We drafted him, because we wanted him. We signed him even though we wanted him to spend one more year developing and to save some money, because we wanted him. Capela always had a lot of promise, he is just really young and raw. That's why we wanted him to stay another year to develop.
They drafted him because they wanted him, they signed him because his agent made a power play and Morey got worked. But if Capela's agent hadn't done that Clint was never going to be in a Rockets uniform, he was going to be used for a deal to get another player
What proof do you need, they didn't want to sign him because they were going to try and get Bosh and Parsons done that year and just going off Morey's history of trading euro stash players its not hard to see what would have been inevitable
So you don't have any proof then. There were multiple ways we could have gotten Bosh without stashing away Capela and Parsons we could get as long as we matched. Capela had nothing to do with that. As for trading euro stash, we do that for players we don't want or need. We don't sign them like we did Capela.
