Would make sense. I'm happy for the 1,000 workers, and it's a nice gesture, even if... manufactured. But to bring back hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs, to reward the rust belt, Trump is going to have to dismantle worldwide automation.

Seems to me to make a real dent for manual workers around the country it's going to take the massive infrastructure program (which would only be temporary) or a major sort of jobs / training program or culturally accepting much lower pay than ever before (to be truly competitive). Whatever Trump does, I hope he can make major progress.

As some have said, the devil is in the details. What should not be forgotten is that at the end of the day, 1000 jobs were saved. This is a huge win for Trump, and the optics of the whole thing can only help the new administration.

People who depend on a paycheck to feed their families could care less if Corp x got tax breaks or promises for a more unregulated environment.

Politicians of all stripes have given up on retaining jobs in America. Here comes a white knight that promises them that things will be now different. Democrats who see Trump as a one termer may underestimate him again.

I won't make a bet. But, I would think if Pence already had it lined up, they'd have used it before the election to polish their bonafides.

This. However, I don't think it's going to be a theme of the next 4 years or anything. Obama did some PR things like this early in his admin too. This was some low-hanging fruit for Trump to look good. Corporations are no more empowered now to extract concessions than they were before.

Well how do you think the Trump administration enticed Carrier to stay?

It isn't even clear the Trump administration did anythiing at all. The state put in some tax incentives, like states quite often do. Maybe Trump helped orchestrate that..don't know, don't care. This is a classic nothing to see here, move on...EXCEPT for the positive outcome of keeping American jobs in America. Not sure why liberals are suddenly so against the working class. Ironic, no?

Agree...and it very nice to have people such as yourself on this board, who actually look at things objectively, and you can have reasoned discussions with. Tax incentives have been around since there were taxes, it is certainly nothing new.

Well Mike Pence is a apart of Trump's administration, seems the still current Indiana governor is linked to this.

No one is against approximately 1000 Americans keeping their jobs, people are curious about the means. People are curious how Trump is going to come through on his campaign promises on the economy. It's no coincidence Trump tweeted this out since this was a specific issue and specific company on his campaign trail. It's just part of the game by Trump while people are still waiting on exactly what Trump will emerge in January.

I do wonder if Indiana gave up more concessions than they'd otherwise be willing to so that they can leverage the PR benefit of casting this agreement as a victory for the President-Elect. I suppose that's not new either though.

Trump's and Pence's support of corporate welfare should surprise no one:

Not really. Carrier's an established brand. That they're struggling now lends more to the idea that US corporate policy is turning all companies into losers. He's not giving them money to set-up like what Obama did with Solyndra.

Is every one of Carrier's competitors getting the same treatment? Are they playing by the same rules?

Not sure why that would matter in a free market. In a free market everyone competes on equal ground. If one company is getting a perk because they threaten to leave, that wouldn't be equal ground (assuming the competitors don't get the same perk).

Trump/Pence absolutely saved jobs...but who will pay for them? A smart company wouldn't throw away a chance to reduce costs by $65 MM without some incentive. I'm genuinely curious of what your thoughts are.

robbing Peter to pay Carrier (if that is what happened) is not saving jobs, it's corporate welfare cronyism

So no details yet on what Carrier get in return? 1K jobs is nothing, really. If we are talking about the whole AC and inter-related industry, that's a different story. One company? Will wait for details.

This is yet another reason why I couldn't take any Trump-endorsing libertarian seriously, if he is indeed just giving them taxpayer subsidies.
