I'm on the bandwagon that B'Ob was never a huge fan of Brock and it was a Smith/McNair decision. The articles ipaman quoted is good evidence, as is just watching. This doesn't mean B'Ob was adamant against it, or wouldn't work with it. I'm sure he put in his two cents, which included some positives. But with as good a look behind the curtains as we currently have, and what we're seeing, and B'Obs attitude, and McNair's attitude and comments towards Brock, and Smith's comments ("I'm getting you a QB..."), it just seems very very likely. What's more, as B'Ob has been forced to simplify the offense, Brock has gotten worse. There was a number of weeks earlier in the seasons where I said maybe B'Ob isn't a good coach, has too complex a system, needs to dumb it down a bit, add more play action, add more stuff to the TEs, etc. And he's done all that, seemingly to me, and Brock has gotten worse, in a way that is just inexcusable... just missing wide open throws. Finally, switching to Savage. Clearly B'Ob would be doing this now if it was anyone other than Brock as the starter. In any case, McNair is the guy at the top. That won't change until he sells his team, which won't happen. So now we're looking at a triangle of blame, imo, between: B'Ob, Smith, Brock. Yes the rest of the team needs work, but these are the key guys. If there were to be repercussions from such sucktitude offensively, I think bar none the best outcome would be Smith gone, Brock gone, B'Ob given another year and a draft.
Carr also has an exceptional offensive line; the key difference is he's very obviously driving the Raiders' truck - he's far and away the best player on that offense; Dak is riding shotgun to Elliot. He may get there - there's nothing to suggest Dak's merely a product of an incredible offensive machine around him. BUT... to excel as he has as a rookie... that's almost certainly because he landed in a ridiculously advantageous situation. He would not be doing the same things here that he's doing there. The swing and miss on Carr (and, to a lesser extent, Jimmy G) will be the one that haunts BOB's tenure. Carr fell into his lap and, for whatever reason, BOB passed at a time when they had no young QB to develop. Ultimately a terrible decision; there was NO excuse not to walk out of the 2014 draft without a highly-rated QB; there were 3-4 and you were picking first in each of the first two rounds... no excuse.
But he's also sending the message that he can't coach... Remember, Osweiler was decent last year under Kubiak; he has regressed significantly under BOB. NO ONE should be under any delusion that they can walk out of this unscathed; Smith and BOB both should have to answer for it.
I can't believe they would have gotten a QB Bill OBrien didn't want, especially considering that he's been able to make all the moves he's wanted. And most of his QB decisions have been bad, so it wouldn't be surprising that Brock was his decision (with Rick going along with it)
Yea but BOB did see film on him if that helps: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/spo...uisition-began-in-film-room-ended-6886807.php
Well I don't think we have any proof that he's gotten all the moves he wanted any more than we have proof what B'Ob did/didn't want. Closest we have is insiders noting that its a B'Ob/Smith/McNair decision with McNair as the deciding vote. The fact that there is a need for a deciding vote implies neither B'Ob or Smith get all the moves they want. One would think the QB decision would be a special one where perhaps B'Ob gets what he wants. But, as you note he hadn't exactly hit home runs with the prior QBs - even though said QBs generally had career years - and more importantly, it was clearly a rushed decision, with more of a we have to have our GM get this FA move done quickly. We do at least know that B'Ob wasn't as involved in the process. Hadn't spent time with Brock, etc. Maybe that's fine and normal - he was a FA, Denver was bidding, it did need to move a little faster. And maybe B'Ob said "I love it, go get him!". But we have lots of hints and rumors and stories that this wasn't the case. No one can argue the Texans had great offenses in any year under B'Ob, and he does have to take blame for that, especially as it has gotten worse and worse. But at this point I'm willing to give him more slack than anyone else in the organization and Brock. Happy if they all get replaced, but if B'Ob stays I wouldn't be upset either. And regardless of all of that, they can still make the obvious move of giving Savage a chance, and allowing ownership, fans and media to better gauge where the ship is broken.
Classic example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. As much as a hot-head as he is, I wouldn't put it past him. I'm not saying I know for sure what's going on, but it's pretty obvious that something is just different about this team this year. I think it goes further than just bad QB play. I think there's definitely some sort of power struggle going on between Smith and BOB. BOB has to know he can't win that one, so it's almost like he's just on auto-pilot right now. Maybe I'm digging to deep, but something is just off, do you agree? What do you think it is?
It was a McNair and Smith decision. Funny thing is I was watching the Pat v Denver game with a Broncos fan. When the Broncos won I turned to him and said McNair is in love with him now and he will be a Texan next year. Low and behold Texans were the front runners to sign him. Kinda sad and very predictable
I think they've lost three in row and their death grip on a bad division has loosened, so fans are pissed. This is the same team as last year, IMO: they beat bad teams; get blown out by good ones; BOB continues to look overwhelmed. Someone asked this morning on, I believe 790, if they could name a signature offensive performance under BOB - they cited Fitzpatrick's six-touchdown say v. Tennessee but, beyond that... the pickings are slim. And he's an offensive coach... We need Brock Osweiler to blow a knee out; that's the only way we can.... Sa(l)vage the season.
Exactly!! If it was someone else I would say you and I were reaching but it's Teapot we're talking about here. He strikes me as the type to do exactly.
Wouldn't be surprised if he left for a college job especially the Notre Dame one. Why would he want to stay with this team, who he's having a power struggle with, and with this crap QB he has to coach through next year as well knowing it could cost him his job next year?
Just playing devils advocate (I actually like BOB and hope he returns...), but his coaching style seems better for college. High-paid, primadonna athletes don't always work well with a loud, in-your-face coaches. Maybe he sees the writing on the wall, despite his relative success, and goes back to college. Then again, coaches themselves have egos, and maybe he wants to win at the professional level.
I have never seen any "hints" that Bill OBrien doesn't have the main power over personnel decisions. Look at how different the personnel acquisitions have been since Kubiak left. Rick is just deferring to the coach.
You are just ignoring all of the FACTS, they're not "hints" as you call them, that don't support your line of thinking. Look at my earlier posts, several times Smith overruled or led BOB Mallet being the prime example.
The fact is Bill OBrien has had main personnell say. I mean you really think Rick Smith is the architect of all the moves that have been made? Going back to Kubiak years, Rick Smith only has had minimal input. When the team started to suck all of a sudden leaks came out suggesting that OBrien didn't have anything to do with it. OBrien is great at leaking and not much else.
I blame Cal McNair for the mess that this team is in. Not because I have any proof that he's done.....well, anything in the last 15 years really.....but because I hate his face. I hate his mannerisms. I hate how low-energy he looks and acts. I hate how he put me to sleep when I attended a seminar where he was a keynote speaker. And mainly, because I want to.
They put BO'B in a bad spot... He was sold as the QB whisperer, and he's being exposed as fraud that really only benefited from speaking to Brady a few times... Brock on the other hand was always a fraud... Denvers defense was the reason for all of that success in Denver in 2015... Brock will NEVER be anything other than a clipboard holder... Siemian looks like a pro bowler in comparison...and Siemian is below average., so that says a lot. BO'B can't break through to Brock because Brock is garbage.... There is no break through to him...he will be a good commentator once he's forced out of the league. When you'd rather have Hoyer back...bwahahaha...whew....*sigh*...that's just sad. BO'B at the end of the day is all bark and ZERO bite. Dude can't start even Savage if he wanted to because McNair won't let him....at least not yet. Walls are closing in on BO'B.....he'll prolly bounce after this season. Texans motto 2018: "Lets try this again"
I might be different from others, but I didn't expect much from Brock after watching last year. He was better than any other free agents but the only way he was going to succeed was with a solid o-line, running game, and elite defense. I didn't care about how much he got paid. Even if he put up less than average numbers, the team would win because of the other parts of the team. Unfortunately, due to injuries, the defense and the offensive line are performing less than expected. Even Brock has played less than the lowered expectations. If this team had Watt, Kevin Johnson, the offensive line of Brown, Sua Filo, Martin, Allen, and Newton; this team would be winning a lot more games.
...and he will own the Texans until he dies or until he turns over the reins to his worthless-ass trust fund kids.
I admittedly didn't read any of your links (more because I don't really care; no offense to your efforts) - but I'm going to guess most are of the "sources" variety? Those are not FACTS. We don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Personally, I find it hard to believe BOB was sidelined on such a regime-defining decision.
