Very impressive introductory press conference from former Rice offensive coordinator and fellow Mensa member, Tom Herman. He's going to close the borders in recruiting. He'll build a wall on the Red River and Oklahoma will pay for it.
Spoiler I'm the right guy because I surround myself with great people. I have talked to the team. Team meeting at 4:15. Laid out expectations & what they can expect after the Christmas break. I have not studied the roster. [What Charlie Strong said] Undue pressure on you to meet those expectations? No. There will be no greater expectations from anyone outside our program. The expectations will be from within. Coach Strong is an unbelievable man. At the end of the day, expectations internally will be greater than any outside expectations. D'Onta Foreman? I have not have a chance to talk to him. Plan on doing so shortly (tomorrow morning). 6 wins, 5 wins, 5 wins, your message to recruits to come to Texas? There is talent here. You'll be the best trained team in America. Physically/mentally tough. Never once have I seen a football coach hoist a trophy and say 'We out-finessed them.' We're gonna be physically & mentally tough. They're gonna get a premiere education. Houston to Austin, any adjustments you'll need to make? None. You gotta recruit hard, coach hard. I met with our team. I told them this program is gonna be hard. Winning is hard. They don't hand out championship trophies. None of that will change. The formula always works as long as people put in the necessary effort & energy. If you recruit great players, which we will do, and execute that plan for the love of the guy next to you, for the love of your position coach & for the love of the program, good things will happen. Feelings you have to soothe? I think so. It was what I led the meeting off with. A lot were close with Charlie & should have been. Staff hirings? Major Applewhite? I've been here 6 hours. Most important thing is the players in the locker room & getting on the road recruiting. Staff will play itself out over the next couple weeks. Past year, lots of speculation. Exhausting. Sense of relief? Yeah. Especially when that place is UT. Take a deep breath, realize where you're at and that exhaustion is worth it. Bowl game? Haven't thought about it. Not a decision for me to make. Mike & I will talk if that decision comes. Pressure? Pressure is that uneasy feeling when you're unprepared. Pressure is self inflicted, self doubt. We're prepared for this job. We're prepared for success. I don't feel any sense of pressure at all. Previous staff? We will interview everyone tomorrow at 8am. I'm checking on their background. We'll give them an opportunity to present themselves. Older, more talented team. It can be difficult. Things will be different. When they've been doing it a certain way for many years, it's hard to convince your way is the right way. A&M game? I haven't had time to think about it. Ask me in a couple weeks. Logistically, it's difficult but I haven't given it a thought.
Have y'all heard that he's a member of Mensa? Spoiler https://www.us.mensa.org/featured-content/member-spotlight-tom-herman/
Poster on Horns247 He just said in his press conference that he will interview the leftover coaches tomorrow at 8 a.m. Bobby Burton Yeah. It won't be that kind of interview. Burton seems to think the interviews will just be a professional courtesy.
He's very declarative while Charlie was optimistic. It's weird to describe how comforting that is. He can make you feel like you don't know what you're talking about for say that the team won't be good. I think this feeling is "Swooning"
He's much better with the media than Charlie, who frankly seemed timid most of the time. His mic drop about pressure was telling. It's interesting to hear him talk about bringing back elements from Mack Brown's regime - relationships with high school coaches, "loving" culture - while also appearing to be someone who will focus on details and hold the players and coaches accountable.
Slightly off topic, but is anyone going to volleyball at Gregory this weekend? I'll probably go to UT-A&M if that materializes. Bracket: http://www.ncaa.com/interactive-bracket/volleyball-women/d1
Hopefully he doesn't turn out like Sumlin, but his body of work at big time program was only a few years, and only 2 years of head coaching experience so there isn't much of a track record with him. He had one good year as a head a coach.
Source is usually Jason Higdon or Chip Brown from Scout. Some of it is behind a paywall so usually don't post a link. Looks like LSU is going to offer a $2M deal to Aranda which is way too good to pass up. That's HC money.
